Reaction of Sugarcane Genotypes Against Wilt Disease (fusarium Sacchari).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field trail was conducted on screening sugarcane genotypes against wilt (Fusariumsacchari) disease at three locations viz. Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI) farm, Ishurdi, Regional Sugarcanr Research Station (RSRS) farm, Thakurgaon and Akandabaria farm of Carew & Co. Twenty three sugarcane genotypes were inoculated by the mixed inocula of different isolates of wilt pathogen following hypodermic syringe method. Among the commercial varieties one found as resistant (R) and another as susceptible (S). Under ZYT-III, among 5 tested clones, 3 were resistant (R), 2 were moderately resistant (MR) and remaining one was moderately susceptible (MS). Under ZYT-II, out of 6 clones, one clone was resistant (R), 2 clones were moderately resistant (MR), one moderately susceptible (MS) and another one was susceptible (S). Under ZYT-I, among 10 clones, 3 were found to be resistant (R), 5 were moderately resistant (MR) and remaining 2 were moderately susceptible (MS) against wilt disease.

Objectives:

i) To identify and select sugarcane genotypes having superior resistance to wilt disease.

ii) Recommendation of new resistant /tolerant varieties/ clones for final release to the growers.

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at three locations viz. Bangladesh Sugarcane Research Institute (BSRI ) farm, Ishurdi, RSRS farm, Thakurgaon and Akandabaria farm of Carew & Co during the cropping season 2008 and 2009 with 23 sugarcane genotypes comprising commercial varieties, clones under zonal yield trial (ZYT) III, II,I and advanced yield trial (AYT). The collected isolates of wilt pathogen were cultured on potato dextrose agar (PDA) medium for 10-12 days to sporulate and mixed inoculum was prepared from the fresh culture. Inoculation was done at the stage of 8 months of plant. Clone were inoculated in the middle of the third internode above the ground level following hypodermic syringe method where puncture was done by special made needle(2 cm long and 2 mm dia.). The punctured point was covered and wrapped by insulating tape in order to keep away from oxidation and contamination. The inoculated canes were examined by splitting longitudinally after three months of inoculation and graded according to symptomatic method.

Achievement/Findings:

Wilt disease causes a great loss of cane every year.By this experiment, varieties showed resistant or tolerant reaction to wilt disease. As a result, the farmers will be economically benefited by getting higher yield.So by cultivating wilt resistant varieties the economic condition of farmers will be improved.
