Impact of Outbreak of Avian Influenza in 2007 on Production, Marketing and Consumption of Poultry Meat and Eggs in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study felt urgency to estimation of direct and indirect losses and the impact avian flu on marketing and consumption of poultry meat and egg in Bangladesh. It is evident that the average losses per farm were Tk. 135010for broiler farms and Tk.764245 for layer farms. The total losses of the 73 farms owners were estimated about Tk. 94749966 and the total losses will be more than thousands core if we considered the other relevant stakeholders losses. It is observed that layer farming is more profitable than the broiler farming. The layer farming was also severely losses due to infestation of avian flu in 2007. There was a high farming was level of backward and forward linkages in the commercial poultry farms.

Location: Eight districts of Bangladesh, viz.: Dhaka, Gazipur, Pabna, Kushtia, Kishoregonj, Nilphamari, Thakoregaon, Joypurhat, and Chittagong were selected for this study.

Objectives:

a). To examine the nature and extent of infestation of avian influenza and estimate the direct and indirect economic losses of the nation as well as for the farm owners.

b). To determine the cost, returns, and profitability of broiler and egg production in pre- avian influenza, during avian influenza and post-avian influenza situation.

c). To estimate the marketing cost, margins and efficiency in pre-avian influenza, during avian influenza, and post-avian influenza situation.

d). To study the impact of AI on backward and forward linkages industries (feed industry, veterinary products supplies, beef industries.)

Methodology:

Both the primary and secondary data will be used in this study. The collection of primary data requires selection of the study areas. A multi-stage stratified random sampling technique was followed for collected of primary data in this study. In the first stage, out of 16 infected districts of avian flu, eight were randomly selected. Out of 73 culled broiler farms through-out the country, 30 farms were covered in the selected districts. The names of the farms were finalized after afield reconnaissance. In addition, another 30 non-affected by avian influenza were also surveyed. In the second stage from each of the selected areas, three categorizes of market intermediaries were chosen and these are wholesaler, 90 wholesaler-cum-retailers and retailer. From each area, at least 6 wholesalers, 9 wholesalers,90 wholesaler-cum-retailers and 120 retailers were surveyed. In the third stage, from each of the area, at least 150 consumers taking at least 30 from each of the farmer, service holders, businessmen, wage labourers and religious leaders groups were interviewed. Thus, the study covered a farm survey of 30 commercial poultry farm, 270 intermediaries and 1350 consumers for survey and data were collection both for the normal and at avian flu situations.

Achievement/Findings:

The poultry industry of Bangladesh faced a terrific financial loss for the remorse of avian influenza. The price of broiler decreased by about 50 percent in the wholesale and retail market from Taka 56-25 to Taka 5-10. The poultry farm owners faced a huge amount of financial losses in Bangladesh. Many farm owners were bound to stop poultry raising as they lost their capital. At the end, the avian influenza occurred in Bangladesh in February 2007. Till July 04,2007, a total of 2,38,781, chickens have been culled from 73 poultry farms located in 16 districts in Bangladesh. The farm owners had already lost their farm business and government has a little effort to provide them incentives.
