The Study revealed that the poultry industry of Bangladesh faced a terrific financial loss in 2008 which was estimated Tk. 385 8.31 crore. The prices of broiler declined by about 28 per cent while the price of eggs decreased by 26.5 per cent. Many farm owners were bound to abandon poultry rearing as they lost their capital. The study was undertaken to assess the imp act of Avian Influenza (AI) on poultry sector of Bangladesh. It is found that the average loss per farm was Tk. 431543 for broiler and Tk. 5928971 for layer farms. The total loss of the 547 farm owners was   estimated at about Tk. 258.31 crore, and t6he total national loss was Tk. 3858.31 crore. Majority (about 70 per cent) of the consumers’ received information on avian flu from TV followed by their neighbours (about 60 per cent). About 40 per cent of the respondents felt that avail flu is a contagious and dangerous disease. 36 per cent of consumption of poultry meat reduced during avian flu and the consumers opined that it is harmful for health. Problems related to poultry sectors were identified by the poultry farmers and these were; lack of credit, high price of day old chicks, load-shedding, outbreak avian influenza, and lack of veterinary services.

11 districts of Bangladesh, viz: Dhaka, Narayanganj,Gazipur, Narsingdi,Feni, Chittagong, Baguna, Khulna,Jessore,Nilphamari and Dinajpur were selected for this study.

  Socio-economic and Policy
  Impact

 a) To estimate the direct and indirect economic losses of the producers` and the nation as a whole.

b) To evaluate the prices of poultry meat and eggs in different market intermediaries and their sales volume in normal and post-avian influenza situations.

c) To study the impact of AI on backward and forward linkage industries.

d) To study consumer`s preference for consumption of broiler and eggs and knowledge and attitude towards avian influenza.

e) To identify the problems and to suggest measures in avian influenza situation of Bangladesh.

Both the primary and secondary data were used in this study. The collection of primary data required selection of the study areas. There were 47 districts attacked by avian influenza in 547 poultry farms. Out of 47 districts, 11 districts of Bangladesh, viz: Dhaka, Narayanganj, Gazipur, Narsingdi, Feni, Chittagong, Baguna, Khulna, Jessore, Nilphamari and Dinajpur were selected for this study. A multi-stage strified random sampling was followed for collection of primary data in this study. In the first stage, out of 47 infected districts of bird flu, eleven districts were selected according to high incidence of avian influenza.  Out of 547 culled poultry farms throughout the country, 38 affected farms and 30 non-affected farms were surveyed covering 11 severely AI affected districts. In the second stage, from each of the selected areas, three categories of market intermediaries were chosen and these are wholesaler, wholesaler-cum- retailer, and retailer. From each area, at least 2 wholesalers, 3 wholesaler-cum-retailers, and 5 retailers were selected randomly. Thus, a total of 22wholesalers, 33 wholesaler-cum-retailers, and 55retailers were surveyed. In the third stage, from each of the area, at least 50 consumers taking at least 10 from each of the farmer, service holders, businessmen, wage labourers and religious leader were interviewed. Thus, the study covered a farm survey of 38 avian influenza affected and 30 non- affected poultry farms, 110 intermediaries and 550 consumers and data were collected both for normal and for bird flu situation.

The poultry industry of Bangladesh faced a terrific financial loss due to avian influenza in 2008 when 16, 37,266 poultry were culled up to 23 June 2008. Many farm owners were bound to stop poultry raising as they loss their capital. The economic losses of layer farming were 12 times higher than the boiler farming and the average estimated loss per farm was Taka 431,543 for broiler farms and Taka 59,28,971 for layer farms. The total losses were about Taka3858.31 cores in 2008 due to avian flu. Layer farming was also severely affected and has undergone heavy losses due to infestation of avian flu in 2008. There was a high level of backward and forward linkage in the commercial poultry farms pacifically in layer farming. The broiler farming has a straight association mostly with forward linkages. The price of poultry meat and egg decreases by 26 to 28% in all cases. Thus, the price support policy during avian influenza could have influence on producer profit. There is a declining trend of both broiler and egg consumption at that time.
