A field study has been taken in T.Aman season, 2001 at BRRI farm, Gazipur to determine the effects of selected water shortage conditions at different growth stages on the yields of WSR and TPR cultivation with three water treatments. Grain yield and yield attributes of Aman rice were significantly influenced by planting methods and irrigation. The highest number of filled grain per panicle (131) and 1000 grain weight (25.60gm) recorded from transplanted rice (TPR) with two irrigations. Significantly highest grain yield (4.57 t/ha) was obtained from wet seeded rice with one irrigation at maximum tillering stage. Maximum straw yield (7.73t/ha) recorded from wet seeded rice with one irrigation (at maximum tillering stage) and two irrigation (at maximum tillering and panicle initiation stage). The lowest straw yield recorded from transplanted rice with rainfed condition. The highest net return of Tk. 10421 t/ha was obtained from wet seeded rice cultivation under water treatment of one irrigation at maximum tillering stage (M2) followed by two irrigation at maximum tillering stage and Panicle initiation stage (M3) which was identical with rainfed condition (M1). In transplanted rice highest net return was found from rainfed condition (M1). Lowest net return was found in two irrigation at maximum tillering stage and panicle initiation stage. A maximum benefit cost ratio (BCR) was found from wet seeded rice cultivation (1.5) with one irrigation at maximum tillering stage. Lowest BCR was 1.02 in TPR under two irrigation at maximum tillering stage and panicle initiation stage (M3) water tenement.

  1. To determine the effects of selected water shortage conditions at different growth stages on the yields of WSR and TPR cultivation; and
  2. To quantify the amount of water and economic performance of WSR vs TPR under different water stress conditions.

The study has been taken in T.Aman season, 2001 at BRRI farm, Gazipur to determine the effects of selected water shortage conditions at different growth stages on the yields of WSR and TPR cultivation. Water treatments were: M1 - Rainfed condition, M2 - One irrigation at maximum tillering stage and M3 – Two irrigation at maximum tillering stage and panicle initiation stage Plot size was 4m X 5m. Design was split plot with three replications. The selected variety was BRRI dhan31. Sprouted seeds were broadcasted on 21 June, 2001. Transplanted on 22 July, 2001 of 31 days seedling age. Fertilizer rate was 180-100-70-60 kg/ha Urea, TSP, MP and Gypsum, respectively. All fertilizers except urea were applied during final land preparation. Urea was top dressed WSR plots in 3 equal splits at an interval of 20 days and in TPR plots it was done an interval of 15-20 days. Several times Malatheon, Diagenon 14G, Darsban 20 EC, and Diamacron were used for diseases, pest and insect control. WSR was harvested on 31Oct. 2001 and TPR plot on 19 Nov.2001, respectively.

Water used for land preparation was 88 mm and 114 mm for wet seeded rice and transplanted rice cultivation. About 23% water saved in wet seeded rice cultivation method.  About 56.33 mm and 114 mm water was used for crop establishment period.  Effective rainfall of wet seeded rice and transplanted rice cultivation was 649 mm and 528 mm. Higher water productivity (5.36 kg/ha-mm) was found from wet seeded rice cultivation under water treatment of one irrigation at maximum tillering stage (M2) followed by Rainfed condition (5.04 kg/ha-mm). In transplanted rice cultivation higher water productivity (4.81 kg/ha-mm) was found from rainfed condition followed by one irrigation at maximum tillering stage (4.2 kg/ha-mm). Water use efficiency (WUE) was higher in wet seeded rice cultivation under rainfed condition (M1) and it was 112 % followed by one irrigation at maximum tillering stage (M2) was 104%. In transplanted rice it was higher (93%) also in rainfed condition (M1) followed by one irrigation at maximum tillering stage (87%). Grain yield and yield attributes of Aman rice were significantly influenced by planting methods and irrigation.  The highest number of filled grain per panicle (131) and 1000 grain weight (25.60gm) recorded from transplanted rice (TPR) with two irrigation. Significantly highest grain yield (4.57 t/ha) was obtained from wet seeded rice with one irrigation at maximum tillering stage. The lowest grain yield (3.46 t/ha) recorded from transplanted rice with two irrigation.
