The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Productivity of water was found much higher (13.13 kg/ha-mm) in BRRI dhan28 than that in BRRI dhan29 (6.73 kg/ha-mm) mostly because of less water consumption in the former case owing to its shorter growth duration. A total of 2608 mm water used in Aus-Aman-rabi (P1) pattern in producing 6879 kg grain/ha/yr. In contrast, aman-boro pattern (P2) utilized 2257 mm water and produced 8909 kg/ha/yr. Overall productivity in P1 and P2 was 3.24 and 5.5 kg/ha-mm, respectively. Although total production was 30% higher in P2 than that in P1, this pattern utilized about 24% less water than P1 during growing season of crops. For this reason water productivity was 22% higher in P2 than in P1. Rainfall utilization was higher in pattern P1 (97%) than pattern P2 (64 -73%) and consequently irrigation water application was higher in P2 than P1. Although P2 utilized 37% more irrigation water than P1, both yield and water productivity was higher in P2. Therefore, from the productivity point of view, adoption the pattern P2, is advisable if irrigation water is ensured.

  1. To quantify irrigation water required for two major cropping patterns;
  2. To maximize rainwater utilization for the above patterns; and
  3. To explore possibilities of residual soil moisture utilization for non rice crop cultivation.

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur. Major cropping patterns (P1=Aus-Aman-Rabi and P2=Aman-Boro) were tested. In Aus season, BR26 was grown in 20 m x 8 m plots. Twenty-two days old seedlings were transplanted on 2 April 2001. In Aman season, BR11 was grown in 24 m x 7 m plots in pattern P1 and in 24 m x 6 m plots in P2.. Seedling age was 35 and 32 days and transplanted on 5 July and 18 July 2001 respectively, in P2 and P1.In boro season, BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were grown in 10.25 m x 7.5 m plots. The seedlings age for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 was 37 and 43 days, respectively. In rabi season, pea was sown as relay crop in T.aman field of P1 on 15 November 2001.  T.aman was harvested with different straw height of 0, 15 and 30 cm to conserve and utilize soil moisture for non rice crop cultivation.  Soil moisture was measured by gravimetric method at an interval of 7 days from the experimental plots. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 135-100-70-60 kg Urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum per ha for BR26, 180-100-70-60-10 kg urea-TSP-MP-Gypsum-Zinc Sulfate per ha for BR11and 220-120-85-60-10 and 270-130-120-70-10 kg urea -TSP-MP-gypsum-zinc sulfate per ha for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29, respectively. All fertilizers were applied as basal during final land preparation except urea, which was top-dressed in 3 equal splits of 15-20 days interval. Plant protection measures were taken in each season as and when necessary. The most water saving irrigation technique i.e., irrigation water application 3 days after standing water disappeared from rice field was followed. Irrigation water was measured by volumetric method.

Total amount of rainfall utilized during the growth span of BRRI dhan28 was 199 mm and for BRRI dhan29, it was 364 mm. Therefore, total water required for BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 was 460 and 777 mm, respectively to harvest 6038 and 5205 kg/ha rice yield from the two varieties, respectively.
