Technical Evaluation of Plastic Pipe in Different Arrangements for Water Distribution System-2002

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at Kapasia, Gazipur, in a DTW outlet to compare the effect of different lengths and diameter of plastic pipe on discharge and to find out the most suitable pipe fitting system. Conveyance losses varied from 0.88 to 2.03 lit/sec/100 m in different pipe jointing system. For suitable pipe fittings of overlap joint, extra overlap joint and clamp joint, the conveyance losses were 0.88 lit/ses/100 m, 1.19 lit/sec/100 m and 1.08 lit/sec/100 m, which was only 6.1%, 4.9% and 3.8% of the pump discharge, respectively. Conveyance losses of plastic pipe for different fittings were varied from 0.88 to 1.19 lit/sec/100 m. On the other hand conveyance loss in earthen channel (clay loam soil) varied from 5.98 to 7.08 lit/sec/100 m depending on the discharge of the pump. For average discharge of 22.40 lit/sec at a distance of 247 m, only 5.65 lit/sec water flow was available in earthen channel, whereas for the same distance and discharge in combined use of 150 mm and 125 mm diameter plastic pipe it was 19.75 lit/sec. About 84% irrigation water can be saved by using plastic pipe distribution system instead of earthen channel system. The saved water can be used to extend the command area.The cost of extra-overlap fitting was the highest in compare to other fittings.

Objectives:

To compare the effect of different lengths and diameter of plastic pipe on discharge;
To compare water availability and costs in plastic pipes and open channels at different distance from the pumping unit;
To find out the most suitable pipe fitting system; and
To compare the cost-effectiveness of different pipe fitting system.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at Kapasia, Gazipur, on reverse slope land (land slope is about 0.30%) in Boro season (2001-2002) in a DTW outlet. In this experiment 125 mm and 150 mm diameter plastic pipe were used with different lengths combination up to 340 m with the following three pipe fitting treatments:T₁ = Overlap jointing,T₂ = Extra overlap jointing by another piece of plastic pipe,T₃ = Clamp jointing with PVC pipe. Pressure heads in the pipelines were measured by using manometer in the pipeline and the discharge of the pump outlet and the end of the pipe were measured by volumetric methods. Conveyance loss in earthen channel was measured by inflow-outflow method. In this method two standard cut-throat flumes were used. Measurements were replicated three times for average reading. Different fittings were tested for different pipe lengths and discharge to find out the suitable one. Suitable fittings and pipe lengths were selected based on the flow volume; easiness of pipe flow; conveyance loss and pipe flow without any type of fittings deformation. Result showed that overlap jointing, which was used in the farmers field was suitable up to the length of 150 m for combined use of 150 mm and 125 mm diameter pipe with the discharge of 14.50 lit/sec. When the discharge volume increased it creates some deformation in the pipe joint. For extra overlap jointing for 150 mm and 125 mm diameter plastic pipe, the length can be increased up to 250 m with the discharge of 24.20 lit/sec. In case of clamp jointing the pipe length can be increased up to 340 m with the discharge of 28.50 lit/sec.

The above study was also done under the discharge range of 14.50 to 28.50 lit/sec based on the different fittings (overlap, extra overlap and clamp jointing), for 150 mm and 125 mm diameter of plastic pipe of length 150 to 340 m. For long distance clamp-jointing method was found suitable compare to other jointing methods. The cost of extra-overlap fitting was the highest in compare to other fittings. But, on the basis of length of pipe used, the flow discharge and the saving of water loss clamp joint was found to be the most suitable one.
