This study was undertaken at GKF site, Kurigram and at RDRS site, Pirganj, Thakurgaon under ICM, PETRRA sub-project. The treatments were: Continuous flooding, Alternative irrigation up to saturation level, Alternative irrigation after 3 days disappearing of standing water and Farmers practices.The performance of BRRI dhan28 and water productivity at GKF and RDRS sites, there was no significant yield difference among the irrigation treatments, though the applied water varied from 813 mm to 1121 mm at GKF site and that was 672 mm to 934 mm at RDRS site. There was a significant yield difference for farmers practice. High water productivity was achieved in both the sites in AWD treatments. Farmers used more urea fertilizer and more water but could not achieved higher yield. The performance of BRRI dhan36 and water productivity at GKF and RDRS sites were significant yield difference, though the applied water varied from 822 mm to 1134 mm. The highest yield obtained 8183 kg/ha with high water productivity (9.47 kg/ha-mm). In RDRS site, there was no significant yield difference among the irrigation treatments, though the applied water varied from 693 mm to 862 mm. But the lowest yield was found in farmers' management plot, though the amount of water was high (945 mm) high fertilizers used. High water productivity was achieved in both the sites in AWD treatments. The performance of BRRI dhan29 and water productivity at RDRS site were significant yield difference among the treatments, though the applied water varied from 745 mm to 1068 mm. High water productivity was achieved in AWD treatments, though the number of irrigations were minimum. Farmers used more urea fertilizer and more water but could not achieved higher yield.

  1.  Determine of water use efficiency for different water regimes;
  2. Determination of number of irrigation and amount of water for achieving maximum yield; and
  3. To find out the economically viable method of irrigation for Boro rice cultivation.

This study was undertaken in Boro season 2001 – 2002 at GKF site, Kurigram and at RDRS site, Pirganj, Thakurgaon under ICM, PETRRA sub-project. At each site, 3 shallow tubewells (STW) based farmers were selected for this study. At least one farmer was selected for each location based on the farmers chosen BRRI released latest varieties. At GKF site, farmers chosen BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 and at RDRS site farmers chosen BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36 for cultivation. The soil texture of the study sites was determined. The experiments were laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with the following treatments and replicated three to four times within the selected farmers fields. The treatments were: Continuous flooding, Alternative irrigation up to saturation level, Alternative irrigation after 3 days disappearing of standing water and Farmers practices. In research management treatments, fertilizers were applied as per following the BRRI recommendation and in farmers’ management treatments, fertilizers were applied as per farmers’ practices. The amount of water applied for each irrigation was measured by volumetric method or V-Notch and the rainfall data was recorded. The yield and yield contributing data of rice for each water treatment was measured following the standard method. The collected data were analyzed statistically and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) was used to determine the significant differences among the treatments. The water use efficiency was also calculated for each treatment.

The performance of BRRI dhan28 and water productivity at GKF and RDRS sites, there was no significant yield difference among the irrigation treatments. There was a significant yield difference for farmers practice.
