T. Aman Rice The per-hectare net return for producing T.aman rice varied between GKF and RDRS sites, and among farms. The average yields per-hectare of aman rice were 4705 kg at GKF site and 3872 kg at RDRS site. Among farms highest BCR (2.26) was obtained by Dohara farms and lowest BCR (1.53) was obtained by Prasadkalua farms, although per-hectare yield was higher than Dohara farm.
MV Boro High yielding boro rice varieties were grown by all farms. The yields per hectare of boro rice ware 5425 kg, 5094 kg and 6565 kg on Prasadkalua, Shibram and Jothgobardhan farms at GKF site and 4515 kg, 5333 kg and 5052 kg on Shibpur, Uttar Shibpur and Dohara farms, respectively at RDRS site. The per hectare boro expenses were almost the same (around Tk 18,764 at GKF site and Tk. 18,056 at RDRS site). As a result, farmers at GKF site earned greater net returns than RDRS site. Among farms Jothgobardhan farm has higher BCR (2.25).
Wheat The per hectare gross expenses for wheat production ranged from Tk. 12,061 to Tk. 12,533 at GKF site and Tk. 14,085 to Tk. 14,836 at RDRS site. The average yield per hectare of wheat was 2220 kg at GKF site as against 2694 kg at RDRS site. The net returns per hectare of wheat was Tk. 7,146 at GKF site while it was Tk. 8,248 at RDRS site.
Potato The results of the analysis suggest that the differences between the per hectare returns from potato at GKF and RDRS sites were greater. The BCR for potato cultivation ranged from 1.39 to 1.56.
Vegetables The maximum per hectare net retunes for producing vegetables was Tk. 11,5061 on Prasadkalua farms and minimum net returns was Tk. 89,719 on Uttar Shihpur farms. Farmers earned 5 to 6 times more income from vegetables cultivation.
Resource Use for Crop Production
i) Land Utilization The average form sizes varied between GKF (0.63 ha) and RDRS (0.52 ha) sites, and among farms average cultivated land were 0.89 ha, 0.73 ha and 0.28 ha on Prashadkalua, Shibram and Jothgbardhan farms, respectively. On the other hand, average cultivated land were 0.49 ha, 0.49 ha and 0.58 ha on Shibpur, Uttar Shihpur and Dohara farms. Average land holding was higher at GKF sites .
ii) Labour Utilization Per hectare utilization between GKF and RDRS sites and among crops were varied, which revealed that Kurigram farm used 171, 194, 94, 148 and 317 man-days/ha for T. aman, MV boro, wheat, potato and vegetables cultivation respectively against 168, 186, 97, 145 and 305 man-days/ha on Pirganj farms.
iv) Manure and Fertilizer Use Kurigram farms used more chemical fertilizer and less manure compare to Pirganj farms.
v) Irrigation Costs Supplemental irrigation cost was needed all farms except Jothgabardhan farm in T. aman season. Per hectare supplemental irrigation cost varied from Tk 2789 to Tk 3901. Per hectare boro and wheat irrigation cost was higher on Pirganj farms due to light textured soil compare to Kurigram farms.
vi) Pesticides Cost Per hectare pesticides cost for producing T. aman, potato and vegetables was higher on Kurigram farms due to more pest infestation. Statistical Analysis of Return and Labour Use
Significant different was observed in per hectare return from boro cultivation among farms but no significant different was observed for labour use.
