Testing of “new Cultivation Practices” for Crop and Fish Culture -2002

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur to assess the conservation of rainwater using plastic (polythene) sheet,to determine the productivity of rice, fish and non rice crops,to determine the change of physical and chemical properties of soil; and to determine the economic viability and social acceptability of new cultivation practices in Madhupur area. New cultivation practice (water conservation practice by using plastic sheet) developed by Agrani Samas Kallan Somiety, Madhupur is tested at BRRI farm, Gazipur revealed that the technology has great potential to conserve water for crop and fish culture. In this method plastic sheet was placed about 0.60 m at the bed mini pond for conservation water. Rice and fish were cultivated in the mini pond and vegetable was cultivated on the bank of mini pond. The technology is appropriate for vegetable (papaya, ladies finger etc.) production. Resource poor farmers may also use the technology for maximization their farm income through intensive utilization of family labour.

Objectives:

To assess the conservation of rainwater using plastic (polythene) sheet;
To determine the productivity of rice, fish and non rice crops;
To determine the change of physical and chemical properties of soil; and
To determine the economic viability and social acceptability of new cultivation practices in Madhupur area.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur. In new cultivation practice a mini-pond was prepares by removing soil of about 2 ft (0.60 m) depth from 5 decimal plot. Special polythene was placed at the bottom and side of the mini-pond. Then the plot was filled up with the soil about 1 ft (0.30 m) depth. Rainwater was conserved and utilized for crop and fish culture. Analytical concepts needed to water conservation, soil nutrient status, economic viability and social acceptability of new cultivation practices were discussed with respect to tabular, and cost and return analysis. For determining the economic viability and social acceptability of new cultivation practice in Madhupur area field surveys were done. Ten farm households (who practicing new cultivation practice) were surveyed.

Achievement/Findings:

The result which reveals that total fixed cost (investment cost) was Tk. 12,600. The annual operational cost for the system was Tk. 3,400 on the other hand annual economic return from the system was Tk. 4,300, which reveals that annual net return (over variable cost) was Tk. 900. It was observed that the system had higher economic potential but due to uncontrolled situation of the experimental site, produced vegetables like papaya, ladies finger and fish were stolen by the outsiders.

Fish culture was practiced when the depth of mini-pond was greater than 0.30 m and shallow depth of mini-pond was suitable for rice cultivation. Farmer informed that due to minimum percolation and seepage loss 2 to 3 irrigation was enough to produce boro rice. During T. Aman season removal of water (drainage) was needed to establish the crop in transplanting time. Nitrogen content in soils of both bank and bed was low. Olsen P of the soils was above critical level. Exchangeable K content of the soils was at moderate level. Sulphur content of the soils was low. DTPA Zinc content of the soil was above critical level. The method of rice cultivation by ponding with polythene use can be possible.
