Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2002

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study has been conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur since 1979, Rajshahi since 1994, Rangpur since 2000, Sonagazi since 1999 and Khulna since 1996, respectively. Monthly rainfall and groundwater fluctuations from July 2001 to June 2002 were taken. During this period maximum lowering of ground water was observed in March or April and it was 14.13, 7.92, 4.21, 2.54 and 3.49 m below ground surface at Gazipur, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sonagazi, respectively. Minimum water table depths ware 8.64, 2.1 and 1.41m below the ground surface at Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur, respectively were observed during September and October. Therefore Rangpur, Sonagazi and Satkhira, and Gazipur and Rajshahi areas are respectively suitable for shallow and deep tubewell based irrigation development.

Objectives:

To determine the fluctuation of groundwater level over time and its relationship with rainfall and river stage;
To determine the aquifer characteristics, the static water level and discharge relations of various aquifer systems; and
To evaluate the quality of groundwater and its suitability for irrigation purpose.

Methodology:

The study has been conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur since 1979, Rajshahi since 1994, Rangpur since 2000, Sonagazi since 1999 and Khulna since 1996, respectively through observation wells. Monthly rainfall and groundwater fluctuations from July 2001 to June 2002 were taken. Monthly rainfall and groundwater level data were taken from July 2001 to June 2002.
