Comparative Study on the Performance of Single and Multi-aquifer Tubewell in the Coastal Area-2002

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was taken at BRRI farm, Sonagazi to compare the discharge rate of single and multi-aquifer wells; to determine the quality of water in different wells; to determine the suitable water bearing formations of the wells; and to determine the suitability of water for crop production. Data shows that year round water levels varied from 0.36 to 2.48 m from ground level. The discharge data showed that the low capacity pump give similar discharge (26.4-33.0 lpm) from both the wells. Whereas, discharge varies significantly when high capacity pump was used. Average discharge from the multi-layer strainer well was almost doubled (117.36 lpm) compared to the discharge of the single layer strainer well (62.04 lpm). From all wells highest discharge was obtained in the month of February and lowest in the June. Throughout the time of operation, electrical conductivity (EC) of the water of these wells was found below 0.50 dS/m i.e. suitable for irrigation. Regarding groundwater salinity in different wells in the dry season, it was found that wells more than 120 m depths extract water with ECe value ranges from 0.38 to 0.62, which indicated the suitability for crop production. From the study it was clear that sweet water is available at a depth of 120 m from the ground. HYV Boro rice (BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29) was cultivated by using the water from different wells. Crop was damaged few days after transplanting, as the water of 35 m well was highly saline. Good crop yield was obtained from the water of the wells of 120 m depth. BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan29 were yielded 4.50 and 5.94 t/ha, respectively. This result indicates that HYV varieties were performed better with slightly saline irrigation water.

People in Sonagazi area knew that suitable water for drinking was available at a depth not less than 210 m. But in this investigation it was found that suitable water was available below 120 m depth. So, for drinking purpose, tubewell may be installed in a depth of 120-140 m. This saved about 30-35% tubewell installation cost in that area by reducing boring and pipe requirements. For further investigation multi-aquifer STW installation of 100 mm diameter will be needed to determine the properties and characteristics of the coastal aquifer.

Objectives:

Methodology:

To investigate suitable groundwater at different depth in coastal saline area, IWM Division in collaboration with the Regional Station, installed four single and one multi-aquifer tubewell at BRRI farm, Sonagazi. Four single layer observation wells at different depths (35 m, 55 m, 120 m and 150 m, respectively) were installed in 1999-2000. The multi-aquifer observation well of 210 m depth was installed in 2000-2001. This well contains 6 m filters each at four layers of the well. To evaluate the performance of the single and multi-aquifer tubewells, the following treatments were used: T₁ = 35 m depth tubewell (single layer), T₂ = 120 m depth tubewell (single layer) and T₃ = 210 m depth tubewell (multi-layer) Groundwater was pumped from two wells of depth 120 m and 212 m, respectively. The first well contains a single layer strainer of length 6 m (T₂). The second well contains multi-layer strainer of length 24 m (T₂). These strainers were placed at depths of 128 - 134 m, 161 - 167 m, 184 - 190 m and 199 - 205 m, respectively. For pumping water two different centrifugal pumps of rated capacity 5-80 lpm (low capacity) and 50-250 lpm (high capacity) were installed rotationally in both the wells. Groundwater level and salinity of all these wells were recorded weekly.
