Climate Adaptive Agriculture Practices of the Farmers in Vabodha Area: a Study on Water Logged Village in South-west Region, Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was conducted to understand the nature of the local initiatives in environmental adaptive integrated farming and its impacts on family income, land transaction and nature of employment generation during March 2011 to August 2014. Vabodha has been considered as an unproductive low laying area in Bangladesh mainly due to the water logging situation almost round the year. Since long years millions of farmers could not cultivate and use their land for crop production or any other income generating purposes. Consequently, majority of the families in this area were jobless and find difficulties to have their livelihood even in the subsistence level. However, the situation has changed radically in some villages recently attributable to their own climate adaptive initiatives towards enhanced welfare. The paper shows how the farmers in Dattogati village under Vabodha have improved their agricultural activities using their own ideas and knowledge towards integrated rice, fish and vegetable farming. Present research has given special emphasized to the land transfer pattern in this village which has significantly mitigated the unequal land distribution situation. This study has also grasped how an environmental adaptive integrated farming can improve family income and ensure sustainable livelihood.

Objectives:

1. To under stand the socio-economic characteristics of different types of households in Dattogati village

2. To grasp the land transaction pattern in studied villages which is mainly due to environmental adapting farm practices

3.To explore the environmental adaptive integrated farming and its contribution in family income for sustainable livelihood

4. To identify the possible recommendations made by the local people to improve their own socio-economic condition.

Methodology:

A study was conducted to understand the nature of the local initiatives in environmental adaptive integrated farming and its impacts on family income, land transaction and nature of employment generation during March 2011 to August 2014. Phultala, Abhoynagar, Monirampur, Keshobpur and Jessor Sadar Upazilas were visited for discussion with the people in these respective areas regarding their vulnerability, income sources, land holding pattern and existing available resources. Primarily a focus group discussion was made in this village to understand their socio-economic condition, source of income and environment adaptive integrated rice-aquaculture-vegetable farming. 151 households were randomly sampled out of 358 households are residing in this village. A detailed survey was made using structured questionnaire. Additional information was collected through series of focus group discussion held in this village. Secondary information was collected from Union Parishad, concerned research organizations, newspaper and other informal sources. All the collected data through survey questionnaire eas tabulated according to the objectives of the study. In this process, the authors have interpreted the data and put them into the perspectives in relation to their first hand survey results and their observations in the fields.

Achievement/Findings:

Peoples' initiatives in environmental adaptive integrated agricultural farm practices have played as a push up factor for development and have improved their agricultural activities using their own ideas and knowledge towards integrated rice, fish and vegetable farming. Level of education was found quite low among the household heads however, they have enough job options in rural areas which were generated through present integrated farm practices. Demand of labor and wage rates were reasonably high in this village due to the nature of integrated farm practices which provided them year round work opportunities. Households were earning their large share of family income through fish farming although, rice cultivation was found as other important source of income. Unlike national income level, majority of the families were found under mid and upper level of income group and income is quite equal for all the households. This better income situation was also contribution of newly adapted farm practices.
