Prevalence of Common Helminth Infection in Calves at SAU Cattle Farm

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was undertaken to study the prevalence of common helminth in calves of SAU cattle farm. Total 11 number of calves used in the study was divided into 2 groups: Group-A consists of calves of more than three months (n=5) and Group-B consists of calves more than one year (n=6). Parasitic load between the groups were compared where it was found that calves of Group -A were more infected than Group-B which indirectly indicate that all dams might be infected by gastrointestinal helminth.

Objectives:

To know the clinical condition of calves
To know helminth load in calves by quantitative method

Methodology:

The study was undertaken to study the prevalence of common helminth in calves of SAU cattle farm during July 2013 to March 2014.

The total number of calves were 11 and divided into two groups on the basis of age:

Group-A: consists of Calves more than 3 months

Group-B: consists of Calves more than 1 year

Around 5 g of fresh fecal sample from each individual will be drawn directly from the rectum with aseptic condition (using hand gloves). The basic demographic information age, sex and body weight were measured and the eggs of helminth were identified.

Achievement/Findings:

The study revealed that the all the calves of SAU cattle farm were positive for gastro-intestinal helminth. Parasitic burden was higher in new born calves compare to older calves which indirectly indicate that all dams might be infected by gastrointestinal helminth.
