The study was conducted to quantify amounts of surface water available for crop cultivation; to document feasibility of rice cultivation with the available water resources; and  to assess economic benefits of crop cultivation at Kismat Fultola, Khulna. The site was located beside the river Kazibachha having a sluice and a flash gate at the south and north to the 3.5 ha experimental field. The soil of the experimental field was saline and 26 farmers were participated in the research program. During the study period, topsoil salinity was measured monthly and river water salinity was measured daily to determine its suitability for rice cultivation. BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 were grown in the dry season 2003-04 during mid-November to mid-April. About 35-40 days old seedlings were transplanted in the last week of December 2003 with the spacing of 20x20 cm. Soil test based fertilizer was closed to BRRI recommended fertilizer rate and it was applied as per BRRI recommendation i.e., at the rate of 220-120-85-60-10 kg urea, TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulfate per ha. The whole of TSP, MP, gypsum and zinc sulfate was applied as basal at the time of final land preparation. Urea was top-dressed in three equal splits at 15-20 days interval. For yield estimation, 5 m2 area was harvested four from four corners and one from the middle of the rice field and yield was finally expressed in kg/ha at 14% moisture contents. yield of BRRI dhan28 and BRRI dhan36 was higher than that obtained in the previous years, were about 3411 and 3630 kg ha-1, respectively. about 110 neighboring farmers’ cultivated BRRI dhan28 and harvested much higher grains (4524 kg ha-1) than that obtained by the participatory farmers from the research field. A few neighboring farmers cultivated BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan36, yields of which were 5939 and 4301 kg ha-1, respectively.
