Optimization of Sowing Time for Advanced Lines and Recently Released Wheat Varieties in Different Agro- Ecological Zones of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at WRC, Dinajpur, RWRC, Gazipur, RARS, Jamalpur and RARS, Jessore of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during November, 2013 to March, 2014. Factor-A-six dates of sowing (Nov. 10, Nov. 20, Nov.30, Dec. 10, Dec. 20 and Dec. 30) and factor-B-six genotypes including recently released variety (BARI Gom 26, BARI Gom 27, BARI Gom 28, BAW 1130, BAW 1138 & BAW 1140) were accommodated in main plot and sub plot, respectively in a split plot design with three replications at all the locations. The highest grain yield (4.44 t/ha) was obtained from Dinajpur which was statistical identical with Gazipur (4.40 t/ha). November 30 seeded plot gave the highest grain yield (5.53 t/ha) that was identical with November 20 sowing (4.41 t/ha). November 30 seeded plots gave the highest grain yield at Dinajpur (4.99 t/ha) which was identical with Gazipur (4.66 t/ha) on November 30 while November 10 (4.73 t/ha) at Jessore. The lowest grain yield was found on November 20 (3.93 t/ha) at Jamalpur. BARI Gom 28 produced the highest grain yield (4.28 t/ha) that was identical with BAW 1140 (4.22 t/ha) and BARI Gom 26 (4.17 t/ha) among the genotypes. BAW 1138 produced the lowest grain yield (3.84 t/ha). All genotypes showed better performance (≥ 4.0 t/ha) at all locations except Jamalpur. Among the genotypes, BARI Gom 27 produced the highest grain yield (4.66 t/ha) at Dinajpur that was identical with BARI Gom 26 (4.61 t/ha) at Gazipur, BAR Gom 28 (4.60 t/ha) at Jessore and BAW 1140 (4.61 t/ha) at Dinajpur. BARI Gom 27 gave the lowest grain yield (2.95 t/ha) at jamalpur. BARI Gom 28 showed comparatively better results followed by BARI Gom 26, BARI Gom 27 and BAW 1140 in all dates of sowing with some exceptions. The highest grain yield (4.88 t/ha) was obtained from BARI Gom 26 when seeded on November 30 and the lowest was found in BAW 1138 (2.76 t/ha) on December 30 seeded plot. BARI Gom 28 gave highest yield (5.31 t/ha) when seeded on November 20 at Jessore and BARI Gom 28 (5.30 t ha) when seeded on November 30 at Dinajpur and BAW 1140 (5.15 t/ha) on 30 November at Gazipur that was identical with a number of treatments. BAW 1138 produced lowest grain yield (1.76 t/ha) when seeded on December 30 at Jamlpur. From the stability analysis, it was observed that BAW 1130 followed by BAW 1140, BARI Gom 28 and BARI Gom 26 gave better performance among the genotypes in respect of quadratic response. Similar trend was observed considering different genotypes and environments.

Objectives:

2. To find out location specific optimum sowing times.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at WRC, Dinajpur, RWRC, Gazipur, RARS, Jamalpur and RARS, Jessore of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute during November, 2013 to March, 2014. Factor-A-six dates of sowing (Nov. 10, Nov. 20, Nov.30, Dec. 10, Dec. 20 and Dec. 30) and factor-B-six genotypes including recently released variety (BARI Gom 26, BARI Gom 27, BARI Gom 28, BAW 1130, BAW 1138 & BAW 1140) were accommodated in main plot and sub plot, respectively in a split plot design with three replications over the locations. Intercultural operations like thinning, weeding and irrigation were done as and when necessary. Yield and yield contributing related data were recorded. Weather data was also recorded during the crop season. Unit plot size was 3 m X 2 m. Harvested area was 2.4 m²^. Combined analysis of grain yield was done with MSTAT-C program (Gomez and Gomez, 1984 p.341) and mean separation was done LSD (0.05). Stability analysis was done with AMMI model (Crop Stat 7.2- cross site analysis). Weather data was recorded during the cropping season over the locations (Appendix I).

Achievement/Findings:

From the two years results, it may concluded that BARI Gom 26, 28, BAW 1130, 1140 may be cultivated on November 20-30 over the locations for getting higher yield.
