Integrated Crop and Nutrient Management for Increasing the Productivity of the Coastal Saline Soils of Bangladesh-investigation for Suitable Groundwater in the Coastal Areas for Crop Production-2004

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to find out suitable groundwater for irrigation at any reasonable depth; to practically examine the suitability of groundwater for dry season rice cultivation in Munshiganj area, Satkhira; and to increase crop production, cropping intensity and the long-term environmental impacts of the study. The pond water in Munshiganj area was less saline during the whole year. The EC of the collected pond water samples varied from 0.72 dS/m to 1.79 dS/m, which was much below the maximum permissible limit (4 dS/m). The pond water salinity was maximum in March/April and minimum in September/October. The above results indicated that the pond water in Munshigaj area remains within the permissible limit throughout the year and is suitable for irrigation. Water of the river Maloncho, near Munshigaj was found to be highly saline during the whole year and was unsuitable for irrigation. The salinity of the river water varied from 6.57 dS/m to 23.79 dS/m, which was above the permissible limit (4 dS/m). Salinity of the river water started to increase from December and continued up to April. It then started to decrease again from May and the minimum value was found in November which also remained unsuitable for irrigation. There is a shallow aquifer at a depth from 30 ft to 58 ft (9 m to 18 m) and then there is a hard clay layer of about 112ft (34 m) thickness (from 58 ft to 170 ft depth). It is possible to grow rice successfully in dry season in that area by utilizing the groundwater of good quality from the deeper aquifer.The yield of BRRI dhan28 was lower than the potential yield. The dry season crop cultivation in the saline zone will help to improve the livelihood of the resource poor farmer by increasing yearly total production of rice in two seasons instead of the existing single season.

Methodology:

The salt concentration of the water samples of Munshiganj area, collected from different sources (pond water, river water and groundwater) in each month. The electrical conductivity (EC) of the samples was expressed in deci Siemen per metre (dS/m).

Achievement/Findings:

The groundwater, collected from hand tubewell in the study area was also found to be highly saline throughout the year. The minimum salinity was 8.26 dS/m in November and the maximum was 16.35 dS/m in April. All of these hand tubewells pumped water from the shallow aquifer (20 m- 25 m depth) in that area. In Munshiganj area the groundwater salinity of shallower aquifer is severe throughout the year and not suitable for irrigation. It was possible to grow rice successfully in dry season in that area by utilizing the groundwater of good quality from the deeper aquifer.The yield of BRRI dhan28 was lower than the potential yield.
