Assessment of Groundwater Resources and Safe Utilization in Different Geo-hydrological Regions-2004

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted at BRRI farm Gazipur, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sonagazi. Monthly rainfall and groundwater fluctuation from July 2003 to June 2004 showed that maximum lowering of groundwater was observed in March/April and minimum in September/October in most of the locations. Maximum water table depths were 16.0, 8.4, 4.9 and 3.51 m at Gazipur, Rajshahi, Rangpur and Sonagazi, respectively. In the previous year (2002-2003), the corresponding depths were 14.7, 7.5 and 4.5 m at Gazipur, Rajshahi and Rangpur area, respectively. This result showed that the maximum groundwater level in this year was lower than the previous year indicating that groundwater level is going downward day by day during dry season. The lowering may be due to increased pumping demand and scanty rainfall from November to March. Minimum water table depths were 10.5, 2.3, 1.1 and 0.73 m at the above mentioned 4 locations, respectively which were very close to the previous year’s results except at Gazipur. At Gazipur the minimum water table depth was 1.8 m lower than the previous year’s level.The study indicated that Rangpur and Sonagazi areas are suitable for shallow tubewell but Gazipur and Rajshahi are suitable for deep tubewell based irrigation development. It is also observed that groundwater level is gradually declining day by day during dry season but it is recharged fully after the monsoon except a few locations.

Rangpur and Sonagazi areas are suitable for shallow tubewell but Gazipur and Rajshahi are suitable for deep tubewell based irrigation development. It was also observed that groundwater level gradually declining day by day during dry season and it recharged fully after the monsoon except a few locations.
