Study on Water Requirement and Management Practices for Rice Cultivation Under Aerobic Environment-2005

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur in Boro season 2004-05 with 6 treatments. Objectives of the study was to quantify water requirement for raised bed rice cultivation under aerobic condition and compare it with climatological water demand for rice; and to design appropriate furrow spacing for efficient water distribution and management in raised bed rice cultivation system. From this study it was found that almost all the yield contributing characters were higher in flat bed system. The highest yield was observed in flat bed and yield was decreased 12-25% with the increase of raised bed width. About 12% lower yield was obtained in 40 cm raised bed than the flat bed. Yield of BRRI dhan28 was about 23%, 19%, 23% and 25% lower in 60, 80, 100 and 120 cm raised bed plots, respectively than the conventional flat bed. Evapotranspiration (ET) demand of BRRI dhan28 for the entire growing season was 358 mm. But total water applied for the growing season of rice was less than ET demand in flat bed, but more water was applied than ET demand in all the raised bed plots. Although deficit irrigation was applied for rice cultivation in flat bed system BRRI dhan28 produced about 5 t/ha yield.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at BRRI farm, Gazipur in Boro season 2004-05 with the treatments of T₁ = Flat bed rice cultivation system (saturated), T₂ = Furrow spacing 65 cm (40 cm bed width), T₃ = Furrow spacing 85 cm (60 cm bed width), T₄ = Furrow spacing 105 cm (80 cm bed width), T₅ = Furrow spacing 125 cm (100 cm bed width) and T₆ = Furrow spacing 145 cm (120 cm bed width). Thirty-nine days old seedlings of BRRI dhan28 were transplanted on 31 January 2005 after proper land preparation with the spacing of 20 x 20 cm in each bed. The fertilizer rate was 101-24-43-11-7 Kg N-P-K-Zn-S/ha. The whole amounts of P, K, Zn and S were applied at the time of final land preparation. Urea was top dressed in 3 equal splits 13, 35 and 55 days after transplanting. Weeding was done thrice synchronizing with the urea top dressing. Insecticide was applied twice to control insect pest infestation. BRRI dhan28 was harvested on 5 May 2005. Rice yield was determined on the basis of whole plot yield. The crop was irrigated through 25 cm furrows in all the raised bed plots and was measured by volumetric method. Irrigation was provided as and when necessary to maintain water level full to the brim in furrows so that bed soil soaked properly and keep the soil saturated throughout the growing season of rice. In the flat bed, irrigation water was applied just to saturate the soil.

The highest yield was observed in flat bed and yield was decreased 12-25% with the increase of raised bed width. Yield of BRRI dhan28 was about 23%, 19%, 23% and 25% lower in 60, 80, 100 and 120 cm raised bed plots, respectively than the conventional flat bed rice cultivation system. Evapotranspiration (ET) demand of BRRI dhan28 for the entire growing season was 358 mm. About 94% of the ET demand was applied in flat bed, about 136% of the total water requirement was applied during the entire growth span of rice. In other treatments, water applied for rice cultivation was about 35% more than the minimum water requirements of rice. Although deficit irrigation was applied for rice cultivation in flat bed system BRRI dhan28 produced about 5 t/ha yield.
