Study on Floral Morphology of Lablab Bean (lablab Purpureus L. Sweet) Genotypes in Different Growing Seasons

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An investigation was conducted to evaluate the floral morphology of lablab bean (LabLabpurpureus L sweet) genotypes. Four genotypes namely, IPSA Seam-1, IPSA Seam-2, BU Seam-3 and JER were evaluated during September 2001 covering one main season (winter) and two off-seasons ( early summer and late summer). Morphology of anther and stigma varied among the genotypes during all three seasons. Anthers and stigmas of all the genotypes were normal in colour and shape in winter and almost normal in early summer. In late summer, however, the anthers were blackish brown with burning symptom and the stigmas were blackish brown with only a few or no pollen grains adhered to in IPSA Seam-1,-2 and BU Seam-3. This indicates a partial non-functioning of pollen grain and/or poor receptivity of the stigma resulting poor pod set in late summer.

Objectives:

To study the floral morphology lablab of bean genotypes in different seasons.

Methodology:

The investigation was conducted at the Horticultural Research Farm as well as in the Tissue Culture Laboratory of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University, Gazipur with four lablab bean genotypes- IPSA Seam-1, IPSA Seam-2, BU Seam-3 and JER during September 2000 to December 2001 covering three seasons: main season- winter (October-January) and two off-seasons –early summer (February-May) and late summer (June-September). Fresh samples were dissected under a microscope for recording different parameters such as size of flower, standard, wing, keel, anther filament stigma ovary etc. The size of different floral parts was measured by using Ocular micrometer, which was adjusted with eyepiece and stage micrometer. Macroscopic observations were also made on anther and stigma and significant photographs were taken using a photomicroscope (Nikon). The recorded data were analyzed statistically following factorial Randomized Complete Block Design.

Achievement/Findings:

Findings of this study lead to conclude that from early summer onwards the size of anther, filament, stigma, style and ovary was reduce to some extent; shininess and stickiness of stigmatic surface was fading out; and the colour of stigmas and anthers was changing to ultimate burning symptoms causing non-dehiscence of anthers, poor pollen production and poor receptivity of the stigma altogether resulted poor pollination.
