Development of Integrated Management Approach for Stemfly(ophiomyia Phaseolo Tryon) on Blackgram.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to develop an intergrated management package against stemfly ( Ophiomyia Phaseolo tryon) on blackgram.The management approaches tested in study were T₁ =Line BMAP-9139, T₂ = Intercropping with Maize, T₃ = seed treatment with Carbofuran, T₄^₌seed treatment with Carbofuran + Intercropping with Maize, T₅=seed treatment with Carbofuran + spray of Dimethoate @ 2 ml/l at 30 days after sowing (DAS), T₆=Seed treatment with Carbofuran + Spray of Dimethoate @ 2 ml/l at 30 DAS + Intercropping with Maize and T₇ = Farmers practice (FP). Among the approaches T₆ appeared to be most effective and showed comparatively lower larvae and pupae per plant, percent infested plant, percent stem tunneling per plant and gave the highest yield followed by T₅_,T₄_,T₃. In case of Benefit cost Ration, the highest value was obtained from the treatment T₅ (2.81), which was followed by T₃(2.67) and T₆ (2.34).

Objectives:

To develop an integrated management package aganist stem fly (Ophiomyia phaseoli) of blackgram.
To develop economically feasible integrated management approach combining cultural practices, seed treatments and foliar spray with synthetic insecticides.

Methodology:

In the study, blackgram line BMAP-9139 and maize variety Barnali were used. The experimental was conducted in the field of Breeder Seed Production Centre,Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Debiganj, Panchgarh, Bangladesh during August to December 2005. Seven treatments were selected based on findings of previous experiments (Prodhan 2007). The treatment were : T₁ = Sole blackgram line BMAP-9139, T₂ = intercropping with maize, T₃ = seed treatment with Carbofuran (4%), T₄ = T₂ + T₃, T₅ = T₃ + spray of Dimethoate @ 2 ml/l at 30(DAS), T₆ = T₅ + intercropping with maize and T₇ = Farmers practice (FP) (Broadcasting and no weeding) – Control.

The experiment was laid out in a RCB with four replications and 3.0 m x 3.0 m unit plot size. Plot to plot and block to block distances were 0.75m and 1.00m, respectively. at 7 days after germination, ten randomly selected plants were uprooted from each plot and brought in the laboratory. Roots were cleaned to remove adhering soil,plant stems of each plant were dissected with a scalpel and observations of length of stem, length of tunnel and the number of larvae and pupae present in the stem were recorded. The number of stemfly damaged plants in each samples was recorded. Data collection were performed up to pod formation at 10 days interval. Blackgram was harvested on October 30, 2005. The cobs of Maize was harvested 25 days after blackgram harvesting (Nov 15), The yield per plot was recorded and converted into yield per hectare. Data were analyzed using MSTAT software and the treatment means were separated by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

Integrated management for stem fly on black gram indicate that among the treatments, treatment T₆ (seed treatment with Carbofuran (4%) + spray of Dimethoate @ 2 ml/l at 30 days after sowing (DAS)+ Intercropping with maize) was most effective and gave comparatively less number of larvae and pupae per plant, lower percent of infested plant and stem tunneling per plant followed by T₅, T₄, T₃, T₂, & T₁. More than 98.83 to 218.49 percent yields per hectare increased due to integrated treatments over Farmers practice.
