Raising Layer Chicken Over Fish Ponds in Integrated Poultry- Fish Farming System in Rural Areas

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Studies were conducted for raising layer chicken over fishponds. Starcross layer birds "579" of 28 days old were reared in houses over pond for a period of twelve months. The birds were fed dry mash adlibitum consisting of crushed wheat, rice polish, fishmeal, propak (Protein concentrate), soyabean meal, sesame oil cake, oyester shell, common salt and vitamin mineral premix. The chicken started laying at the age of 18 weeks and by the end of 12 months period average egg laying was estimated at 78.5%. Mortality of birds during the rearing period was 4%. The ponds were stocked with carps - Hypophthalmichtys molitrix. Catla catla, Labeo rohita, Cirrhinus mrigala. Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio. Species ratios of fishes were 3:1:2.5:2.5:0.5:0.5 respectively with density of 6,000/ha. Size ofingerlings at stocking ranged 7-15 cm. There was no supplementary feed given for fish growth, excepting for the chicken excreta falling into the ponds. After 12 months rearing fish production were 5,762.60 kg/ha. Economic analysis of the operation showed a total net benefit Tk. 2,70,259.00/ha.

Objectives:

(i) To evaluate the feasibility of integrating poultry (Layers) raising with fish culture.

(ii) To evaluate the economic benefits.

Methodology:

The study was undertaken in Hazir bazar, Village of Baluka thana under Mymensingh district, during the period February 1995 to January 1996. The experiment was conducted in three ponds of 1500 m² each with a water depth 1 m. Three chicken houses with an area of 22 m² and bight 1.8 m each, were constructed over 50 em above the pond water level using bamboo's. The roof of the houses was covered with terrestrial grass. The floor of the house was made of bamboo splits with a space of I-I.5cm in between splits, to allow chicken excreta to fall directly into the ponds. The side walls of the houses were made of coarse bamboo mats upto a hight of 0.6m, above with bamboo net fencing was provided for ventilation. Day old starcoss '579' layer chicks were raised in a brood house for 28 days after which they were transfered to houses over the ponds at a density of 500 chicks/ha. (75 chicks/pond). The chicks were randomly distributed into three replication. Ration for chicks was prepared by mixing locally available feed ingredients. Protein and fibre content of feed was estimated as per A.O.A.C. (1980) for starter, grower and layer ration. The birds were fed with dry mash ad-libitum throughout the experimental period. The chicks were vaccinated against new castle, bursal, fowl pox and fowl cholera diseases.

All the ponds were stocked with fingerlings of Hypophtalmichthys molitrix, Catla catla, Labeo rohita. Cirrhins mrigala. Ctenopharyngodon idella and Cyprinus carpio. at a stocking density of 6,000 fingerlings/ha with species ratios of fishes 3: 1: 2.5 :2.5 :0.5 :0.5 respectively. The average size of fingerlings at stocking ranged from 7-15 cm. Excepting excreta of chicken falling into ponds, no other supplementary feed or fertilizers were given in the ponds.

Daily records of feed consumption, egg production, costs of feed and mortality of chicks were maintained. Pond water was monitored at bi-weekly intervals for dissolved oxygen, p^H, temperature and transparency. The ponds were netted at monthly intervals to observe the growth and well being of the fishes. At the end of 12 months rearing, the fishes were harvested first by seine netting and later by draining the ponds.
