The average yield of rice is 3.7 t ha-1 in Aman season and 5.2 t ha-1 in Boro season whereas the obtainable yields of most popularly grown high yielding varieties (HYV) of rice in corresponding seasons are 6–7 t ha-1 and 8–10 t ha-1. This difference between actual and obtainable yields is known as yield gap. The experiment was conducted at different 8 upazilas with the objectives to minimize yield gap through increasing rice yield by 0.5 - 1.0 t/ha using Integrated Crop and Resource Management (ICRM) practices and to enhance skill and knowledge about modern rice production technologies of participating and associated farmers. The results indicate that adaptive research trials on Integrated Crop and Resource Management (ICRM) practices for minimizing rice yield gap conducted in 810 farmer’s fields during Boro and Aman seasons. Increased grain yield, straw yield and net income were found in both seasons. Farmers benefited by increased rice yield of 0.5-0.8 t/ha during Boro seasons and 0.9-1.3 t/ha during T. Aman seasons. They also benefited by extra return nearly Tk.16500/ha and Tk.23000/ha during T. Aman and Boro season respectively.

  Adoption of technology
  1. To minimize yield gap through increasing rice yield by 0.5 - 1.0 t/ha using Integrated Crop and Resource Management (ICRM) practices.
  2. To enhance skill and knowledge about modern rice production technologies of participating and associated farmers.

On-farm farmers' participatory trials were established in 3 villages of each of 9 upazilas in 5 districts. In each village 10 farmers fields were selected in Aman and Boro seasons. In selection of farmers, priority was given to the CIG (common interest group) farmers where available. Each farmer’s field (about 1 bigha) of above locations was divided into two parts to assign two treatments – a) farmers’ management practice (FP) and b) Integrated crop and resource management practice (ICRM). The project provided the inputs for ICRM practices. Farmers’ provided inputs of rest management practices including irrigation cost and labor. The project provided a part of labor only for the management practices required by the treatment in addition to farmers’ management practice and for data collection. Data on input uses, cost of production and yield were collected. Expert scientists from BRRI provided training to the farmers on selection of varieties, quality seeds, healthy seedlings, optimum planting time, optimum aged seedlings, balanced fertilization, improved water management, weed management, insect management, disease management, quality seed production, storage and processing. Close contact with farmers were maintained through farmers’ meeting helping farmers practically in performing ICRM practices, monitoring the field activities and field days. In case of the locations under the supervision of SPS (Jamalpur and Sherpur) the trainings were organized  by SPS but the resource speakers for the important topics on ICRM practices were the scientists from BRRI for effective dissemination of knowledge and skill on ICRM. Field days and farmers rally were conducted in each location to generate interest and awareness about ICRM technologies and hasten dissemination.

Yield gap was higher (0.9-1.3 t/ha) in T. Aman seasons than Boro season (0.5-0.8 t/ha). Farmers are reluctant and not much aware about balanced fertilization, supplementary irrigation, insect and disease management. There is a greater opportunity to minimize yield gap during T. Aman season through application of balanced fertilization, supplementary irrigation, insect and disease management. Usually farmers used over aged seedlings, haphazard transplanting, applied over dose of urea, apply insufficient non-urea fertilizers and do not control the insect pest and diseases. Yield gap could be minimized by 20% during Boro season and by 35% during T.Aman season through successful implementation of ICRM practices among the farmers. In addition, providing training to the farmers, conducting demonstrations on ICRM practices and arranging field days were found as effective tools to enhance the knowledge and skill of the farmers on modern rice production technologies.
