Growth and Yield of Modern Wheat (triticum Aestivum L.) Varieties as Influenced Raised Bed Seeding System and Nitrogen Application.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment consisted of two methods of sowing (bed and conventional), four lenels of N and four modern wheat varieties with three replications. The highest total dry matter production (TDM) was obtained from bed seeding system followed by conventional seeding system. Shatabdi produced significantly the highest TDM up to late grain filling period. The highest TDM was obtained when 150% N applied. In bed seeding system, Shatabdi produced the highest TDM up to 150% N application, the highest TDM was obtained and the lowest TDM was obtained from N treatment in conventional seedling system. Grain yield was significantly increased with the increase of N level up to 150% N application. Significantly the highest grain yield (3152 and 3763 kg ha^-1) was found in Shatabdi when 150 kg N was applied irrespective of seasons. The lowest grain yield was obtained (1410 and 1443 kg ha^-1) from zero N treatment in conventional seeding system. Interaction of sowing method and N level was statistically significant in all the parameters. The highest grain yield (3323 kg ha^-1) was obtained in bed seeding system with 150% N. The lowest grain yield (1418 kg ha^-1) was obtained in conventional seeding in zero N treatment. The interaction effects of N level and method of sowing were statistically significant in days to maturity, number of tillers, spikes m^-2, 1000 grain weight and grain yield. Shatabdi produced the highest grain yield (3978 kg ha^-1) in bed seeding system when 150% N was applied. The lowest grain yield (1445 kg ha^-1) was obtained in zero N treatment with conventional seeding.

Objectives:

To find out the suitable variety and N dose in bed seeding system.

Methodology:

The trail was carried out at Regional Wheat Research center, Rajshahi. The design was strip split plot having three replications. Varieties used were Shatabdi, Gourab, Protiva and the check Kanchan. There were 3 factors having 32 treatments. Methods of sowing a) conventional i.e. flat bed and b) raised bed. The raised bed was prepared 15 cm above from the soil surface which was made by taking the soil from furrows. Four nitrogen doses viz., 50%, 100% and 150% of the recommended doses of N (100 kg ha^-1) and zero N which were placed in sub-sub plots. Two-thirds of N was applied as basal dose in conventionally seeding plots and along with furrows in bed seeding systems plot. The remaining one-third N was applied as top dress in both the method seeding plots. The unit plot size was 3m x 4m. A blanket dose of P₂O₅, K₂O and S @ 60-40-45 kg ha^-1 was applied in the form of Triple super Phosphate, Muriate of Potash and Gypsum. The seed were sown on December 3 in both the years. Five plants samples were collected from each treatment for taking dry weight of the plants parts. At harvest, 3 m² samples of each plot were collected for recording grain yield and five plants were randomly collected from each treatment for recording data on yield contributing characters, namely number of tillers plant^-1, spikes m^-2, spikelets spike^-1, and 1000-grains weight by using method as described by Bell and Fischer (1994). all data were statistically analyzed followed computer package MSTAT-C. The means were separated by using DMRT (p<0.05).

Achievement/Findings:

From the study, it is revealed that among the tested varieties Shatabdi produced the highest total dry matter and there by grain yield. Therefore Shatabdi is recommended as best variety in bed seeding system at 150% N application for higher yield.
