Soil Microbiology Laboratory, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur-1701, Bangladesh.

D. Khanam
Agricultural Research Station, Burirhat, Rangpur, Bangladesh.

An experiment was conducted at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Rahmatpur, Barisal, Bangladesh for two consecutive rabi seasons of 2002-03 and 2003-04 under agroecological Zones 13 of Bangladesh with a view to assessing the effect of Rhizobium inoculation on four cultivars of chickpea. Four chickpea cultivates namely BARI Chola-4, BARI Chola-5, BARI Chola-6 were used in these trails. Basic doses of phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc were applied at the rate of 22 kg P, 42 kg K, 20 kg S and 5 kg Zn/ha without any nitrogen dose both under inoculated and uninoculated conditions. The experiment was designed in Randomized Complete Block Design having 4 replication for each treatment. The Rhizobium strain used was BARI RCa-220. The variety BARI Chola-5 produced higher number of branches, pods/plant, seeds/pod and seed yields and BARI Chola-3 produced higher stover yields. Inoculated plants gave significantly higher plant height, branches, pods/plant, seed/pod, stover yields, 1000 seed weight and seed yields compared to uninoculated plants. The highest seed yields of the inoculated variety BARI Chola-5 (1.80 t/ha and 1.85 t/ha) in 2002-03 and 2003-04 respectively were 20.0% and 19.4% higher the uninoculated ones. Uninoculated BARI Chola-3 recorded the lowest yields.

To study the response of different chickpea genotypes to Rhizobium inoculation on yield and yield attributes at Agro-ecological Zone 13 of Bangladesh.

Two field experiment on chickpea were carried out at Regional Agricultural Research Station (RARS), Rahmatpur, Barisal, Bangladesh under Ganges Tidal Floodplain Soils and Agro-ecological Zone 13 during the rabi seasons of 2002-03 and 2003-04. The experimental site was located ay latitude 22.70 and longitude 90.270. The experiments were designed in Randomized Complete Block Design having 4 replications for each treatment. The dimension of each plot was 4m x 3m. Four varieties of chickpea namely BARI Chola-4, BARI Chola-5, BARI Chola-6 were used with based dose of phosphorus, potassium, sulphur and zinc without any nitrogen dose both under inoculated and uninonculated conditions comprising eight treatment in total (Khanam et al. 1984a). Peat based Rhizobium inoculum was used for experimental works. The Rhizobium strain was BARI RCa-220 and the number of Rhizobium cells/g of peat based inoculate was 4.4 x 108. The cells were counted following the method of Miles and Misra (1938). Before application of fertilizers, soils were collected from 0 to 15 cm depth of the experimental plots and analyzed for the chemical properties of soil. The seeds were coated with peat based rhizobial inoculum @ 1.5 kg/ha before sowing. The seed were sown on 21 November 2002 and 20 November 2003. Plant rots were 30 cm apart from each other with plant spacing of 15 cm. Thinning, weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when considered necessary. Ten randomly plants were selected for recording plant higher at maturity from each plot. Crops were harvested on 01 April 2003 and 24 March 2004. Dry weight of seeds and stovers for each 4 cm x 3 cm unit plot were recorded. Ten plants were also selected for recording branches/plant and pods/plant and ten pods were selected for recording seeds/pod. Thousand seed weight was also noted. All the data were analyzed statistically and Duncan’s Multiple Range Test was done to adjudge the means using IRRISTAT and M-stat package Programmes.

The result are also in agreements with findings of Bhuiyan et al. (1996,2001). the above mentioned results are more or less similar to the present finding with four varieties of chickpea inoculated with a single Rhizobium strain. The nitrogen content in soil was below critical level at both the research stations. Hence, inoculation with Rhizobium strains no. BARI RCa-220 gave significatly higher braches, pods/plant, seeds/pod, stover yields and seed yields in all the chickpea varieties studied. From two-year result it may be concluded that BARC-Chola-5 could be grown successfully using rhizobial inoculant southern region under agroecological Zones 13 of Bangladesh.
