Farmers’ Response to Integrated Pest Management for Binjal Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The purpose of the study was to determine farmer’s response to Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for raising brinjal production. The study was conducted in Belabo upazila under Narshingdi district. Data were collected with the help of interview schedule from randomly selected 80 brinjal farmers. Farmer’s response to IPM were analysed in respect of their knowledge, attitude and practice of IPM in brinjal production. Majority of the respondents had high to medium knowledge and moderate to highly favorable attitude towards IPM in brinjal cultivation. “Proper land preparation”, Use of healthy seed/ seedlings”, “Proper spacing”, “Line planting” were identified as most frequently used practice. “Use of light trap” and “Use of botanical pesticides” were identified as rarely used practices. Farm size of the respondent showed significant negative relationship with their response to IPM but their extension contact showed significant positive relationship.

Objectives:

To change farmer’s traditional knowledge, attitude and practice about pest control.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at two union (Bajnaba and Narayanpur) of Belabo upazila under Narshingdi district where brinjal is cultivated intensively. Out of 400 IPM trained brinjal growers 80 of them were selected randomly. Data were collected with the help of interview schedule. The entire process of data collection took 30 days from March 10 to April 08, 2005. In this study, farmers’ responses to IPM were computed through computing their knowledge, attitude and practice scores towards IPM in brinjal production. Integrated pest Management knowledge of the FFS farmers was measured by 25 different types of questions in relation to various pest management strategies. For correct response to a question, a respondent could get a score 2 (two), for partial correct response 1 (one), and for wrong responses he could get 0 (zero). Attitude of brinjal growers towers IPM was measured by using sixteen (16) different statements in relation to various pest management strategies. The nature of answers of the statements were strongly agree; agree; no opinion; disagree; strongly disagree. Scores assigned for the positive statement were 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1 respectively and the revered scores were given for the negative statements. Sixteen different practices were selected to measure the score of IPM practices. The respondents indicated whether they used the practice frequently; occasionally; rarely and never; Scores assigned to the above four responses were 3, 2, 1, and 0 respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

Most of the respondents were found possessing medium knowledge followed by high IPM knowledge. Medium and high knowledge comprised about 69% of the respondents which indicated that IPM practices would be effective in the farmer’s field as their knowledge level was higher on IPM concept, It was also observed that majority of the respondents maintained a moderately favorable to highly favorable attitude towards IPM. About 81% of the respondents developed moderate to high favorable attitude towards IPM in brinjal cultivation. Proper land preparation, use of healthy seed/seeding, proper spacing and line planting were the most frequently used practices in the study area. This fact led to the conclusion that through season long IPM training, farmers of the study area followed modern practices as advocated.
