Performence of Groundnut Under Different Levels of Bradyrhizobial Inoculum and Nitrogen Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of different levels of Bradyrhizobial inoculum and nitrogen on nodulation, growth, yield and N content in seed of groundnut. Treatments comprised of five levels of Bradyrhizobial inoculum viz. I₀, 1_1,1_3, 1₅and 1₇ at the rate of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 g of peat inocula/100g of seed, respectively and six levels of nitrogen viz. N₀_, N₁₀_, N₂₀, N₃₀, N₄₀_,and N₅₀ at the rate of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg/ha, respectively. The results showed that increased levels of inoculum significantly increased nodule number, nodule weight, plant height, shoot weight, root weight, pod yield and N content in seed. The treatment 1₇ produced the highest pod yield of the crop. Nitrogen treatments also exhibited significant influence on all the parameters studied. Significant reductions in nodule number and nodule weight were observed with increasing levels of nitrogen application. The highest plant weight, dry matter production and pod yield were obtained from the N₅₀ treatment. There was positive correlation of nodule weight, plant height, shoot weight, root weight, pod yield and N content in seed with total number of nodules due to inoculum application. The data indicate that groundnut production can be enhanced considerably through supply of effective Bradyrhizobial inoculum to the farmers.

Objectives:

To study the nodulation, growth, yield and protein content of Zhingabadam variety to different levels of Bradyrhizobial inoculum and nitrogen fertilizer.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Agronomy Field Laboratory of Bangladesh Agricultural University Campus in 1992-93, Mymensingh under rainfed condition where groundnut has not been grown previously. The experimental field belongs to the Sonatala soil series under the Agro-ecological zone of Old Brahamaputra Floodplain. Five levels of bradyrhizobial inoculum, viz., I₀, I₁, I₃, I₅, and I₇ at the rate of 0, 1, 3, 5, and 7 g of peat inocula/100 g of seed, respectively and six levels of nitrogen , viz., N₀, N₁₀, N₂₀, N₃₀, N₄₀ and N₅₀ at the rate of 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 kg/ha, respectively were tested in a split-plot design with three replications assigning nitrogen in main plots and bradyrhizobial inoculum in sub plots. At 60 days after sowing, 5 plants were uprooted randomly from each unit plot leaving the border rows and harvest area. At maturity, 5 plants were randomly selected and harvested from each unit plot to recorded the plant height, shoot and root weight. All the collected data were analyzed statistically and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s New Multiple Range Test.

Achievement/Findings:

The interaction effect between Bradyrhizobial inoculum and nitrogen for all the characters studied were significant. It was revealed from the present study that 7g of peat inocula/100g seed or 50 kg N/ha produced the maximum plant growth and maximum pod yield. Correlation studies indicated that number of nodules was strongly associated with nodule weight, plant height, shoot weight, root weight, pod yield and nitrogen content in seed due to inoculum application.
