Genetic Variability, Character Associations and Path Analysis for Yield Contributing Characters in Hybrid Population of Rice (oryza Sativa L.).

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to investigate genetic variability, character associations and path coefficient analysis of hybrid population for yield contributing characters in an eight-parent half diallel cross in rice during the Transplanted Aman season, 2003. The character filled grains/panicle was the most variable yield contributing character producing the highest magnitude of genotype, environmental and phenotypic variance all together. High GCV and PCV were recorded for spikelet sterility and filled grains/ panicle. Importantly, filled grains/ panicle, thousand grain weight, flag leaf area and panicles/plant had moderate to high GCV and PCV, high heritability and high genetic advance making these four characters most defective in the selection of superior F1s. Grain yield/plant was found positively and significantly associated at both genotypic and phenotypic level for plant height, days to flowering, days to maturity, panicles/plant, panicle length, filled grains/panicle and flag leaf area. From the path coefficient analyses it was revealed that the highest positive direct effect on grain yield was obtained by days to maturity followed by panicles/plant, thousand grain weight, panicle length, and filled grains/panicle. High positive indirect effects on grain yield were obtained by days to flowering, panicle length and flag leaf area, respectively, through days to maturity. Finally, panicles/plant had true relationship with grain yield/plant which suggested that direct selection through this trait would be most effective for improving the yield performance of rice thorough selection breeding.

Objectives:

To develop selection criteria of F₁ genotypes for yield contributing characters in rice.

Methodology:

Eight genotypes of rice viz. BRRI dhan29, BR4828-54-4-1-4-9, BRRIdhan28, IR8,, Amo13,IR6510-38-2-4-2-6-3, Minikit and ZhongYu7 with different quantitative characters were crossed in diallel fashion excluding reciprocals. Twenty-eight F₁s and their parents were grown in a randomized complete block design with three replications at the experimental farm of Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Gazipur in Transplant Aman season, 2003. Twenty five days of seedlings were transplanted with single seedling/hill at the spacing of 25 cm x 20 cm.The estimate of GCV and PCV were classified as low, medium and high. The heritability was categorized as suggested. Again, genetic advance was classified by adopting the method.

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicated that 77 per cent of the variability in grain yield was contributed by the nine component characters studied in this path analysis. This gives an impression that a few other characters than those involved in the present study might also contributed to yield. Hence these three yield contributing characters were the most important traits for the selection of superior F₁s which could produce transgressive segregates in the pedigree nurseries in terms of high yield potential.
