Effect of Preceding Crops on Transplant Aman Rice Productivity and Soil Fertility.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Station, BJRI.Kishoreganj during 2000-03 to study the effects of preceding crops, viz. deshi jute, tossa jute, Transplant Aus, dhaincha (for green manure) and fallow on succeeding Transplant Aman rice were productivity and soil fertility. All the plant characters of transplant aman rice were significantly affected by the preceding crops except panicles m^-2 and thousand grain weight. The grain and straw yields of transplant aman rice were significantly higher when it was grown after deshi jute, tossa jute, Transplant Aus, dhaincha and lower it was grown after Transplant Aus rice and fallow. The nutrient status of soil showed that organic matter, total N, exchangeable K & available P & S slightly increased due to cropping over the fallow. The highest increased but more or less similar was observed after dhaincha, deshi jute & tossa jute and lowest in case of T. Aus rice. The P^H slightly decreased in all the treatments from initial status.

Objectives:

To Evaluate the effect of jute crop along with other preceding crops on succeeding Transplant Aman rice as well as on soil fertility.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Station, BJRI.Kishoreganj during 2000-03. The soil of experimental plot was silt loam in texture. The crops deshi jute, tossa jute, Transplant Aus rice and dhaincha for green manure were raised as preceding crops of Transplant Aman rice following recommended cultivation technique for respective crops. The variety of jute CVL-1 for deshi jute, O-9897 for tossa jute, BR26 for T. Aus and BRRI dhan32 for transplanted Aman rice were used for this study. The fertilizer was applied at the rate of 45.0-5.0-22.5-8.0 kg ha^-1 and 90.0-10.0-45.0-8.0 kh ha^-1 N-P-K-S for CVL-1 and O-9897 respectively and 24 kg P ha^-1 for dhaincha. In case of of rice the crop was fertilized with BR26 and BRRI dhan32. The treatment were replicated four times in RCBD with a plot size of 4.0 x 5.0 m. After harvest of preceding crops the land was prepared. Dhaincha plant was harvested at 49 to 52 days after sowing and average 18.0 t ha ^-1 green biomass was produced, which chopped into pieces and incorporated into soil. The experiment was repeated in 4 consecutive years. Soil samples were collected initially and after harvest of preceding crop soil sample were also collected in each year. Collected samples prepared individually and then made into composite which are preceded by same crop. The soil samples were analyzed at the Humboldt Soil Test Laboratory, BAU, Mymensingh.

Achievement/Findings:

The nutrient status of soil showed that organic matter, total N, exchangeable K & available P & S slightly increased due to cropping over the fallow. The highest increased but more or less similar was observed after dhaincha, deshi jute & tossa jute and lowest in case of T. Aus rice. The P^H slightly decreased in all the treatments from initial status. The maximum increase was found after green manure foloowed by ndeshi and tossa jute. This might be due to decomposition of leftover biomass by preceding crops int he soil. The minimum increase in S content was found after fallow.
