Study and Selection of Different Desirable Lines for High Yield of White Jute

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two sets of experiment were conducted in 2013. A) Seven F₈ lines derived from different cross combinations among the indigenous and exotic accessions were raised at the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute( BJRI), Dhaka. Ten plants were selected based on their higher plant height, cylindrical shape, fast growth and tolerance to diseases. B) F₆ generation of cross combination of cap. dwarf type (red) x BINA vegetable were studied and desirable bushy plant types were selected

Objectives:

a)Searching for the genetic resources enriched with photo and thermo insensitivity, especially allowing more flexibility of sowing and harvesting time with optimum biomass formation,

(b) tolerance to disease and pest

(c) superior quality of fibre producing characteristics for diversified end uses. The objectives of the experiments was to develop high yielding desirable lines.

Methodology:

Two sets of experiment were conducted in 2013. Seven F₈ lines derived from different cross combinations among the indigenous and exotic accessions and F₆ generation of cross combination of cap. dwarf type (red) x BINA vegetable were raised at the BJRI, Dhaka. Each treatment was sown on 24.04.2013 in 3m long rows with four lines and spaced 30 cm between rows. The parents were also sown in 3m long rows with single line. Intercultural operations were done in time for uniform growth. Data were recorded on date of sowing, emergence, first and average flowering, morphological characters like pigmentation, leaf shape and distinguish characters. Desirable plants were selected based on their higher plant height, cylindrical shape, fast growth and tolerance to diseases.

Achievement/Findings:

Seven F₈ lines derived from different cross combinations among the indigenous and exotic accessions were raised at the BJRI, Dhaka. Ten plants were selected based on their higher plant height, cylindrical shape, fast growth and tolerance to diseases. B) F₆ generation of cross combination of cap. dwarf type (red) x BINA vegetable were studied and desirable bushy plant types were selected. This breeding line was proposed for registrations at National Seed Board (NSB) in February, 2014 and it was registered as a new variety named BJRI Deshi Pat Shak-1 (BJC-390).
