Selection of Salt Tolerant Jute Cultivars and Their Stability in Coastal Region of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In order to develop salt tolerant jute variety the present study was carried out during April-13 to September-13 at sub station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute, Pakhimara, Kolapara, Patuakhali and Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Benarpota, Satkhira. Based on fibre yield and yield contributing characters ten selected salt tolerant jute lines were evaluated. Seeds of each genotypes was grown in individual plot, each plot size was 3.0m x 2.1 m. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three raplications. Performance of ten jute lines (F₃ generation) for nine characters such as mortality rate, plant height, Base diameter, Number of node/plant, Internodal length per plant, Green stem weight with leaves/plant, Green stem weight without leaves/plant, Dry stick weight/plant, Dry fibre weight/plant were evaluated and ranked. It was found that the line C-2593 X D-154 best in ranking for all the characters. This was followed by C-12221 X D-154, C-12033 X D-154

Objectives:

1. To isolate a saline tolerant line for costal area, peat soil and deeply flooded soil etc.

2.To develop a line which can be produced in salinity.

3. development of varieties with increase salinity tolerance.

Methodology:

This study was carried at sub station of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute(BJRI), Pakhimara, Kolapara, Patuakhali and Agricultural Research Station of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BJRI), Benarpota, Satkhira during April’13 to September ’13. Ten selected salt tolerant jute lines (F₃ generation) were used in this study. These lines were developed under the Ph.D programe of Mahmud Al Hossain during 2009 to 2012. Seeds of each line was shown in individual plot. Each plot size was 3.0 x 2.1 m.². The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three raplications. Data on nine morphological characters such as mortality rate, plant height, Base diameter, Number of node/plant, Internodal length per plant, Green stem weight with leaves/plant, Green stem weight without leaves/plant, Dry stick weight/plant, Dry fibre weight/plant were recorded on per plant basis in randomly labeled 10 plants in each lines for three replications and mean was put for the particular characters.

Achievement/Findings:

In the present study, nine yield and yield contributing characters of ten jute lines (F₃ generation) have been studied. It is always possible that some lines performed better in some characters, while others performed better in other characters. In order to asses the most favorable ones, it is better to rank each on specific character basis and find out those which are performing better on over all characters. It was found that the line C-2593 X D-154 best in ranking for all the characters. This was followed by C-12221 X D-154, C-12033 X D-154, C-12221 X C-3070 and C-2593 x C-12033 (Table 9a 9b) in Patuakhali. On the other hand line C-2593 X D-154 was best and followed by C-12221 X D-154, C-12033 X D-154 and C-12221 X C-3070 in Satkhira (Table 9c and 9d). This was possibly due to their wider distance than others.
