Multilocation Trials of Smooth Mesta Samu'93.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Multilocation trial of the new breeding line of smooth Mesta SAMU'93 was conducted at three stations of BJRI as well as 2 sites of farmer’s field of Jamalpur location along with recommended variety HS-24 as check for evaluation of yield, adaptability and suitability. SAMU'93 has given higher yield which was about 1.84 percent and 2.38 percent than the check variety HS-24 at BJRI stations and farmer’s field respectively. SAMU’93 out yielded than the control variety in all locations. The fibre yield of SAMU’93 is higher than the check variety HS-24, it has also desirable characters over the control such as, SAMU’93 showed smooth and early maturing characters than the check variety HS-24. The farmers would like to cultivate Mesta as it would be prickle free, easy handling and high biomass in poor land.

Objectives:

1.To grow prickles or pubescence on stems and bristles on calyx and pericarps of Mesta,

2.To creat smoothness, earliness and high biomass production at preliminary and advanced yield trial levels

Methodology:

A plot of 10 decimal was divided into two equal halves, each portion having 5 decimal. One portion was used for SAMU'93 and the other for HS-24 for check. The seeds of both varieties were sown in Mid-April. Proper intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done in time simultaneously for whole plots as per recommendation. The crop harvested at 120 days after germination. Data were recorded on plant population, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight at harvesting time.

Achievement/Findings:

The new breeding line of smooth Mesta SAMU'93 was demonstrated at three stations (Manikganj, Faridpur, Kishroeganj) of BJRI as well as 2 sites of farmer’s field of Jamalpur location along with recommended variety HS-24 as check for evaluation of yield, adaptability and suitability. The results showed that the breeding line of SAMU'93 gave higher fibre yield in the farmer’s plot compare to the control variety HS-24 (Table 2b) and it was also gave higher yield at all the stations (Table 2a). SAMU'93 has given higher yield which was about 1.84 percent and 2.38 percent than the check variety HS-24 at BJRI stations and farmer’s field respectively. The fibre yield of SAMU’93 is higher than the check variety HS-24 and it has extra merit over the check such as, SAMU’93 showed smooth and early maturing characters than the check variety HS-24.
