Zonal Yield Trial of Early Maturing Kenaf

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Two lines 1641/A (KE-1) and 1641/B (KE-2) of Kenaf were tested in 2013 at seven stations of BJRI. Under this experiment, the results revealed that 1641/A (KE-1) at Chandina, Faridpur, Rangpur and Patuakhali; 1641/B (KE-2) at Manikgonj, Kishoreganj and Monirampur gave numerically higher yield than both the check varieties HC-95 and BJRI Kenaf-3. Pooled mean over locations showed that both the lines 1641/A (KE-1) and 1641/B (KE-2) gave the highest yield than the check varieties HC-95 and BJRI Kenaf-3.

Objectives:

1.To isolate two lines 1641/A (KE-1) and 1641/B (KE-2) of Kenaf were isolated for their early maturing character.

2.To test the lines at seven different locations with recommended varieties HC-95 and BJRI Kenaf-3 as check for develop new Kenaf varieties having characteristics of early maturing and quick growing

Methodology:

Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus L.) produces more biomass in poor soil and has great potentiality as renewable raw materials for paper pulp production. Due to its long vegetative period, farmers show little interest to grow in the field. For overcome this purpose, two lines 1641/A (KE-1) and 1641/B (KE-2) of kenaf was isolated for their early maturing character. These lines were tested in 2013 at seven stations (Manikganj, Chandina, Kishoreganj, Faridpur, Rangpur, Monirampur and Patuakhali) of BJRI along with recommended variety HC-95 and BJRI Kenaf-3 as check in a Randomized Complete Block Design with three replication having unit plot size of 3.0m x 4.0m=12 sq. m. The seeds were sown in last week of March to 1^st week of April and harvested in 1^st fortnight of August. Data were recorded on dates to sowing, germination, first flowering, plant population at final thinning and at harvest, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight. Observations and records on disease and pest incidence, quick growing, smoothness and earliness were done.

Achievement/Findings:

Relevant data such as plant population, plant height, base diameter, green weight with and without leaves, dry stick weight and dry fibre weight were recorded (Table-3a). The results revealed that 1641/A (KE-1) at Chandina, Faridpur, Rangpur and Patuakhali; 1641/B (KE-2) at Manikgonj, Kishoreganj and Monirampur gave numerically higher yield than both the check varieties HC-95 and BJRI Kenaf-3.
