Preliminary Yield Trial of Smooth Mesta Strains

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Nineteen progenies of smooth Mesta and a check variety HS-24 were grown at JAES, Manikganj to study their yield and yield attributes. Eight progenies gave the highest yield than the other progenies and control variety HS-24. Although, the fibre yield of eight progenies are higher than the control variety HS-24 and they have showed desirable smooth, prickle free and early maturing characters than the control variety, 5 plants were selected from each lines (L-13, L-41, L-43, L-52, S-5703, L-5836, L-6143 and L-6183). The smoothness and early maturing characteristics are great importance in Mesta breeding as to fit this crop with suitable cropping pattern

Objectives:

1.To study the yield and yield attributes and to evolve an early maturing Mesta having smooth plants and also more biomass in comparison to recommended cultivar per unit time

Methodology:

A study was carried out with nineteen progenies of Mesta (L-13, L-21, L-24, L-30, L-37, L-41, L-43, L-46, L-48, L-52, S-5703, L-5713, L-5784, L-5785, L-5836, L-5872, L-5880, L-6143 and L-6183) and a check variety HS-24 at JAES, Manikganj to study their yield and yield attributes. These progenies were grown in 2 rows of 3 meter length in each replication. Relevant data such as plant population, plant height, base diameter, green weight with leaves, green weight without leaves, fibre weight and stick weight were recorded at the age of 120 days and also recorded on days of first flowering. Standard agronomic practices were followed for uniform growth.

Achievement/Findings:

Eight progenies gave the highest yield than the other progenies and control variety HS-24. Although, the fiber yield of eight progenies are higher than the control variety HS-24 and they have showed desirable smooth, prickle free and early maturing characters than the check variety, five plants were selected from eight progenies (L-13, L-41, L-43, L-52, S-5703, L-5836, L-6143 and L-6183) were smooth, prickle free and early maturing at Manikganj station. The smoothness and early maturing characteristics are great importance in Mesta breeding as to fit this crop with suitable cropping pattern.
