Development of Breeding Materials of Mesta Through Intraspecific Hybridization.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Progenies of 6 cross combinations involving prickled, recommended variety HS-24, smooth fibre type SAMU’93, smooth vegetable type PI-274245 and early maturing and smooth type 2065 were sown in the field of Manikganj in 2013. Under this experiment, it was observed that a wide range of variation in respect of maturity, plant height, base diameter, growth habit, disease tolerance and smoothness was found. Ten promising lines were selected in respect of earliness, smoothness, quick growth habit and other attributes.

Objectives:

Mesta (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) produces more biomass in poor soil especially in sandy areas where nematode infestation is frequent. But Mesta occupies the field for more than 10 months and its stem and petioles are full of prickles. One very smooth but late maturing line was isolated from a local farmer’s field and on the other hand, on early maturing but prickled line was developed. Progenies of 6 cross combinations were sown in the field of Manikganj station in 2013 to develop breeding materials of Mesta in respect of earliness, smoothness, quick growth and other attributes.

Methodology:

In order to combine early maturing characters from early maturing line and smoothness from smooth lines with the recommended high yielding variety HS-24, parents including one high yielding cultivars were crossed without reciprocals. Progenies of 6 cross combinations involving prickled, recommended variety HS-24, smooth fibre type SAMU’93, smooth vegetable type PI-274245 and early maturing and smooth type 2065 were sown in the field of Manikganj station in 2013 having 2 lines of 3m long row for each treatment. Proper intercultural operations and agronomic practices were done for uniform growth
