Genetic dilution of indigenous chickens, called Deshi, have taken place over time because of out crossing with exotic breeds which was investigated at three villages of Bangladesh along with determination of phenotypic variations of Deshi chickens. A total of 107 farmers household were surveyed. The comb color of most Deshi chickens was bright red (79.4%). The eye color was mostly brown (70.1%) and red (24.3%). Neck hackle color was predominantly black (32.7%) and orange (29%). Dominant plumage color was black (33%), gold (31%), and white (20%). The most frequently occurred earlobe color was red (58%) followed by white (45.8%). Skin color was mostly white (98.1%). Shank colors were mostly white (56.1%) and black (30.8%). There was no definite farther pattern among 47.7% Deshi chickens. The comb pattern was mostly single type (86%). Out of 107 chickens, 52.2% were small and 43.9% were medium in body size. Body shape of most chickens was somewhat long (72.9%). Egg size was mostly small (29.9%) having grown (20.6%) and white (17.8%) colored shell. The weight of egg varied from 17.8 to 30.5 cm breast angle from 20.5 cm to 40.6 cm. A few hen and cock were similar to White Leghorn, Barred Plymouth Rock and Rhoda Island Red type in terms of color. However, the shape and size along with tail pattern of these chickens were very much different compared to pure breeds. It could be inferred that Deshi chickens are genetically diluted in about 60% cases depending on phenotypic characters.

  Chicken
  1. to study the characteristics of existing breeds (s) / types(s) at village levels, and
  2.  to generate information on Deshi chickens for future use in poultry breeding.

The study was conducted in three selected village of Mymensing and Gazipur districts. The village were Kewatkhali and Boira of Mymensingh Sadar and Bartha of Gazipur Sadar Upazilas. A total of 107 farmers household were surveyed for data collection on male and female chickens, egg production, egg size, egg weight, egg shell color, color of plumage, shank eye, neck hackle, earlobe, comb, skin and wattle, body shape and size of chickens, morphometric characters such as height, breast diameter and length of chickens were the variable considered in this study. The data were collected through pre-tested structured questionnaire from randomly selected male and female Deshi chickens. The data were collected from a group of 7-10 farmers in a day.The data collected were coded, scored, compiled, tabulated and analyzed in accordance with the objective of the study. Statistical measures like number, average, percentage and frequency distribution, range, mean, standard deviation etc. were found out SPSS-10 statistical software. Multivariate analysis was done employing Discriminant Function Analysis for grouping chicken sample based on genetic dilutions.
