Socio-economic Study on Pond Fish Production in Selected Areas of Bangladesh.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted during 2004-05 to evaluate performance of pond fish production and socio-economic characteristics of the pond owners. Farmers had attitude towards fisheries technology adoption but had no adequate farming knowledge. Scientific fish farming system had not developed due to farmer’s inadequate Scio-economic status and fish farm. Socio-economic status, farming intensity and education level/area of pond of the pond owner were related with each other. Per hectare income decreased with the increase of area of pond both the extensive and semi-intensive pond fish culture because small sized ponds were shallow which allowed them to efficient utilization of resources and to take proper care. Semi-intensive cultural shows significantly higher per hectare return than the extensive cultural due to efficient use of resources and scientific management. Per hectare gross return of landless farmers was significantly higher than medium and large farmers. The reason behind this difference is that landless farmers used less than 0.5 hectare pond i.e. shallow pond which allowed them to efficient utilization of resources and their production was comparatively higher than other categories.

Objectives:

To study the socio-economic status and characteristics of the pond owners
To study the association between selected characteristics of the pond owners.
To compare the fish production status of extensive and semi-intensive cultural.

Methodology:

Primary data were collected through survey method from ten purposively selected greater districts. These are Dhaka, Mymensingh, Faridpur, Dinajpur, Kushtia, Jesore, Comilla & Noakhali. Twenty-seven thans were selected randomly from these districts where a specific village from each than was chosen purposively for data collection. A total 187 households were interviewed through structured questionnaires. Information regarding objectives of the study was collected from one-year records preceding the survey data. Analysis was done on the basis of farm sizes grouped in to (i) very small farm, (ii) small farm (having pond size .05-.25 ha), (iii) medium farm (having pond size .25-1.00 ha) and (iv) large farm (having pond size> 1.00 ha) .Farmers of each socio-economic status were sub-divided in to two categories depending on their pond management, fertilization and feed supply. Collected data were analyzed using statistical measurement. Test of multiple comparisons was done to compare the difference between factors and their levels. Three dimensional contingency table were used ti test the independence of different qualitative variable.

Achievement/Findings:

A significant portion of the pond owners has no proper knowledge of pond fish cultural and they do not adopt scientific fish cultural. Thus pond should be motivated together scientific fish cultural knowledge. Extensive culture results in low production of fish and gradual reduction of cultivable land. Increasing level of education, pons size, the socio-economic conditions of the pond owners could increase pond farming intensity. The result also indicated that increasing the production technology in existing ponds can increase pond fish production. Ponds require physical improvements and regular maintenance. Fish culture can be practiced successfully in small seasonal ponds as small shallow ponds allow to efficient utilization of resources.
