An Economic Study on Goat Diseases in Some Selected Areas of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was an attempt to analyze the prevalence of goat diseases and functional loss incurred therein. For this purpose, a total of 250 goat raising farms were investigated. Results showed that infection in goat, treatment of diseased goat and mortality of goat differed significantly (p<0.01) with areas. The goats were mostly infected by Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), Goat pox, Bloat/Tympany, Parasitic diseases, Haemorrhaegic Septicemia (H.S) and Malnutrition. The morbidity and mortality of goats were found 24% and 11%, respectively. The highest mortality (86%) was due to Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR). Treatment cost per diseased goat was Tk. 46. Financial loss due to death of goat per affected farm and all farms were Tk. 881 and Tk. 338, respectively. Extrapolating 11% mortality on 12.92 million goat population, the annual financial loss was calculated to Tk. 870 million.

Objectives:

1. To know the prevalence of diseases and goat mortality by area;

2. To estimate the financial loss due to goat diseases (death loss and treatment loss) area;

3. To identify the nature of treatment and extent of veterinary services received by the goat raising farmers in those areas.

Methodology:

For this study, 5 districts namely, Bogra, Comilla, Dinajpur, Jessore and Mymensingh were selected. A survey was conducted on 250 goat-raising farm households taking 50 from each of the selected districts. Five villages from each of the selected district were selected considering concentration of goat population. Data were collected randomly from 10 goat raising households from each of the selected villages. Total number of goats reared by the selected households was 1264 with an average of 5.06 per household. Data for the year 2001 were collected using pre-designed and pre –tested schedule by a single visit. A second visit was made to some households for collecting missing information. The survey was conducted during January 2002 to April 2002. Microsoft spreadsheet was used to analyze data. Chi-square test was carried out for better precision of data to determine the prevalence of goat diseases and goat mortality.

Achievement/Findings:

Goat is vulnerable to various diseases, which badly affect the economy of farmers who rear goats. Among the goat diseases, Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR) was found the most fatal and a great menace to goat production. But mortality by various diseases did not differed significantly with areas. In 51% cases veterinary facilities need to be enhanced and disease control measures should be strengthened for profitable goat production.
