An experiment was conducted at Bangladesh agricultural Research Institute, Gazipur during 2007-09 to study a suitable potting material for the cultivation of chrysanthemum and physio-chemical properties of different potting materials. Four different potting materials like soil, tea, waste, saw dust and coconut dust were used in eleven combinations. The treatment combination were T1= soil study, T2= soil + tea waste (1:1), T3=soil + tea waste (3:1), T4= Soil + tea waste (1:3), T5= soil + saw dust (1:1), T6 = soil + saw dust (3:1), T7= soil + saw dust (1:3), T8 = soil + coconut dust (1:1), T9= soil + coconut dust (3:1),T10= soil + coconut dust (1:3),T11= soil+ tea waste + saw dust + coconut dust (1:1:1:1). Average nutrient content in soil + tea water at (1:3) ratios was higher than other materials. Soil physical properties were also optimum characters under different materials. Plants grown in the ration of soil + tea waste (1:3) produced maximum flowers per plant followed by T3 treatment.

  1. To develop the suitable potting materials for pot cultivation of chrysanthemum.

  2. To study the physical and chemical properties of different potting materials.

A pot experiment was conducted in soil Science Division of BARI, Gazipur during winter season of 2007-08 and 2008-09 with four different potting materials. The materials were soil, tea waste, saw dust and coconut dust. The treatments were : were T1= soil study, T2= soil + tea waste (1:1), T3=soil + tea waste (3:1), T4= Soil + tea waste (1:3), T5= soil + saw dust (1:1), T6 = soil + saw dust (3:1), T7= soil + saw dust (1:3), T8 = soil + coconut dust (1:1), T9= soil + coconut dust (3:1),T10= soil + coconut dust (1:3),T11= soil+ tea waste + saw dust + coconut dust (1:1:1:1). The experiment was laid out CRD with 4 replications. Ten inches earthen pots were taken for the experiment. Before setting up the experiment, the physical and chemi3cal composition of potting materials were analyzed in the laboratory of Soil Science Division, BARI, Gazipur. Well decomposed tea waste, saw dust, coconut dust were used with soil before 15 days of seedling transplanting. Ten g TSP and 3 g MoP were added per pot during final media preparation. Urea at the rate of 2,3,2 gm per pot were applied at 20, 30, 40 days after transplanting. Data on plant height, number of branches per plant, number of flower per plant, flower diameter, stalk length and yield of flower per pot were recorded. Recorded different plant and floral parameter were statistically analyzed through analysis variance with the help MSTAT software. Difference between treatment means were compared by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test according to Steel and Torri. Physical properties and chemical status of post harvest media was also analyzed in the same laboratory.

From the finding of two years experimentation, it can be concluded that sandy loam soil + tea waste (1:3) was the suitable potting material for chrysanthemum cultivation in the pot. Similar trends were found in both years. This finding would be very helpful to urban people for the cultivation of chrysanthemum successfully.
