Performance of Heat Tolerant Summer Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Mill.) Hybrids.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the yield performance of heat tolerant tomato hybrids during 2004-2005 at the BARI, Gazipur. The highest yield of fruit per plant (587.50g) was recorded from the C₁₂ and lowest (221.50 g) in line C₃. Hormone application had positive effect on the yield attributes and yield of hybrid tomato. The highest yield of fruits per plant (444.72 g) was recorded from the hormone applied line, which was 65% higher than that of control. The application of hormone caused the highest of fruit per plant (778.00 g) in the tolerant hybrid line C₁₂.

Objectives:

To evaluating yield performance of developed hybrid lines under hormone and non-hormone application in summer –rainy season.

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the farm of Olericulture Division, Horticulture Research Centre (BARI), Gazipur during the month of May 2004 to August 2004. The thirteen heat tolerant hybrids were used as plant materials which were developed by the Olericulture Division of BARI. Seeds were sown in the seedbed on May 2004 and were transplanted in the main experimental field on June 2004. Plants were given support after transplanting in the main field by bamboo sticks. The crop was grown under transparent and non-ultraviolet resistant polytunnel. The polytunnels for the crop were 2.3 mater wide having two 1.0 m wide beds with 30 cm drain in between which served as irrigation channel. Ten metric tons of cow dung an organic matter and chemical fertilizers @ 450kg Urea, 250 kg TSP, and 150 kg MP per hectare were applied. During final land preparation, a half of the cow dung and the entire amount of TSP were applied. The pits were prepared one week before planting. The remaining cow dung and 1/3 of MP were applied at that time. The entire urea and rest two thirds of MP was given in 3 equal installments 10, 25, 40 days after transplanting by top dressing. Data collected from 5 randomly selected sprayed and unsprayed plants on the days to 50% flowering, flowering per cluster, fruits per cluster, fruits per plant, individuals fruits weight, yield per plant, fruit length, fruit diameter, branches per plant, plant height, Brix (%), viable pollen grain (%), and fruit set(%) was calculated by using following formula:

Fruit set(%) = Total No. of fruits of 1st five cluster/ Total No. of flowers of 1st five cluster X 100.

The recorded data for different characters were anastlyzed by MSTAT-C program and genotypes means were compared by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

The study indicated that thirteen hybrids of tomato showed wide range of variability among them for yield and yield components. The hybrids C₄, C₁₀,C₁₂ were superior in respect of yield, fruit set and fruits per plant. Hormonal application helps increase fruit set and yield significantly over natural setting under hot-humid condition.
