Studies on Pod Comples of Country Bean.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Five species of insects pests such as legume pod borer, gram pod borer, plume moth, Taiwan tussock moth, pea pod borer infested the flowers and pods of Country bean. The legume pod borer was the most abundant, serious and destructive insect pest in respect of 18.83% flower and 34.32 % pod damage of country bean among pod borer complex. The flower infestation caused by the other pod borers ranged from 3.46-15.89% and pod infestation ranged from 3.55-9.10%.

Objectives:

To determine the pod borer complex and their damage potentiality at different stages of country bean in the field.

Methodology:

The study was conducted during two bean growing seasons kharif and rabi from June to January of two consecutive years viz., 2005-06 and 2006-07 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Jessore. In each year, country bean seed were sown in 5 plots each measuring 8.0 x 3.0 m at distances of 500 m between plots. Eight pit were made per plot measuring 30 cm x 30 cm and at a spacing of 2.0 m between pits and 10 cm between the plants. Six seeds were sown per pit on 25 May and 05 June for 205-06 and 2006-07. Three plants were kept pit by thinning two weeks after sowing. Weeding, mulching, irrigation and fertilizers’ were applied whenever necessary. The incidence severities of all pod borer insect pests attacking the plants were monitored throughout the study period. The damage due to the individuals’ species insect pest was recorded on the basis of the nature of damage. At each observation, number of health and infested flowers and pods were counted to calculate percentage of flower and pod infestation. All data were analyzed statistically separately for each set of observation.
