Study of Heterosis in Cucumber (cucumis Sativus L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was carried out to estimate heterosis of yield and attributes over mid parent and better parent in 24 cross combinations obtained from 11 diverse parents in a highly significant differences and proper basis for heterosis estimates. All traits revealed significant heterosis with F₇ x M₃ being the highest of all, 32.96% heterobeltosis. Desirable heterosis for dwarfness, earliness and higher yield appeared in F₈ X M₁, F₄ X M₂, F₈ X M₃, F₈ X M₁ and F₇ X M₃ crosses, indicated promising potentiality for commercial exploitation.

Objectives:

1. To produce F₁ hybrid through exploiting the existing variability.

2. To assess heterosis in cucumber.

Methodology:

This study was conducted at Olericulture Division of Horticulture Research Center, BARI during August 2006 to June 2007. Eleven diverse parents viz. CS0008 (F₁), CS0020 (F₂), CS0063 (F₃), CS0066 (F₄), CS0071 (F₅), CS0082 (F₆), CS0093 (F₇), CS0102(F₈), CS0047 (M₁), CS0058 (M₂), CS0090 (M₃), were used, where F series denotes female (line) and M series for male parents (Tester). Of these parents, nine were long to cylindrical while two remainders oval shaped, locally known as shosha and khira, respectively. The parents were cross compatible and crossed in a line x tester approach during October to January 2006 by hand pollination. IN the following summer 2007, entire 24 cross combinations and 11 parents were sown in a randomized complete block design with three replications. All treatments were grown 6.5 m long single row, treated as plot, maintaining plant to plant distance 1.3 m and 5 plants in each replication. A good drainage systems maintained to drain out rain water from the field with inter bed distances of 60cm. All cultural operations and plant protection measures performed as per recommended practices of the crop. Data recorded were: vine length, days to 50% male flowers, days to 50% female flowers, no. of fruit/plant, single fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width and yield per plant. For heterosis, the difference between F₁ and the parent used for estimation of heterosis was taken into account cross wise.
