Evaluation of Potato (solanum Tuberosum L.) Cultivars Resistance to Rhizoctinia Solani Causing Black Scurf Disease.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Twenty seven potato cultivars viz., Serenda, TSP 207/67, TSP 7/3, Provento, Arinda, Samanta, Chamak, HPS 1/67-1, TSP 7/67, 8000996, Multa, Petronise, Maranca, Cardinal, Preludi, Raja, Singal, Heera, HPS 2/67, Dheera, TSP-2, Ailsa, Pontiac, Kuroda, Diamant were eveulated for resist to Rhizoctonia solani during 2006-07 under inoculated condition. Among them Serenede, Arinda, Samanta, Multan, Petronise, Prelude, Raja, Signal, Dheera showed minimum disease incidence and lower reduction in growth parameters. On the basis of them value of different growth characters the cultivars were grouped in to 4 cluster where cluster-I showed less reduction means resistant to the disease followed by cluster-II, Cluster-III, Cluster-IV, Cluster-II contains the cultivars, TSP 207/67, TSP-7/13, Provento, Chamak, TPS-1, TSP-7/67, 800996, Maranca, TSP-2, Kuroda, HPS-1/67. They were moderately resistant where as Cardinal, Kufrisinduri and Pontiac were placed in Cluster-III which were moderately susceptible. Heeera, HPS-2/67, Alisa and Diamant were susceptible to the disease and classified in Cluster-IV.

Objectives:

To evaluate some potato cultivars against R. Sonali.

Methodology:

Twenty seven potato cultivars were evaluated against R. solani isolate during the growing season 2006-07 at RARS, Jamalpur. The potato cultivars were collected from Tuber Crop Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur. The pathogen was isolated from the infected potato tuber. For inoculate preparation a virulent isolate GAZ-11 of R. solani obtained from tuber-borne sclerotia was inoculated in the potato dextrose agar media for 7 days. Five millimeter diameter mycelia disc of the fungal isolate was cut from the edge of 7 days old PDA cultures. Five mycelial discs were added to the Erlenmeyer flask containing water soaked and autoclaved barley grains in the flask. The flasks with inoculated barley grains were incubated at 25⁰ c for 20 days. For soil inoculation, a field experiment was laid out was in RCBD with 3 replications. The unit size was 3m x 5m having 1m distance from one plot to another. Soil of the each plot was sterilized with 10% formalin solution at 15 days earlier of inoculation. The barley grains colonized with the isolate of R. solani was applied to each plot @ 94 g and mixed thoroughly with the soil at a depth of 8 cm. an uninoculated control plot was maintained. Potato tuber of the different varieties was sown at 60cm x 30cm spacing. Recommended doses of manures and fertilizers viz. cow dung 10 tha^-1 urea 350 kg ha-1, TSP 220kg ha^-1, muriate of potash 260 kg ha^-1, Boric acid @ 6 kg ha^-1, Znso4 @ 15 kg ha^-1 and gypsum @ 120 kg ha^-1 were applied in the field. For univariate experiment, analysis of variance was performance for each of the components of disease development following MSTAT-C program. For grouping according growth characters and disease incidence, the data of the twenty seven cultivars were analyzed by multivariate analysis using GENSTA-5.
