Evaluation of Some Traits for Breeding Heat Tolerant Wheat Variety

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Heat tolerance study with sixteen genotypes were carried out at the Wheat Research Centre, Dinajpur during 1992-93 and 1993-94.Genetic parameters of morpho-physiological traits, grain yield and its components were studied to determine the available variability and interrelationship among the traits. Considerable genetic coefficient of variation with moderate heritability accompanied by high genetic advance were found for characters like grain yield, number of grains/ m², grain filling rate, grain yield/ day and 1000 grain weight, Grain yield was significantly and positively correlated with biomass at final harvest, number of grains/ m², biomass/ day, yield/ day and grain fill/ day I hectare. Visual scoring of percent ground cover at Zadok's growth stage 65 might be an easy technique and worthwhile alternative to replace the tedious job of biomass taking at different growth stages.

Objectives:

To study the variabilities, genetic parameters , interrelationship between yield and its components, some morpho physiological traits as well as identification of some suitable genotypes to be used in the crossing programme.

Methodology:

Sixteen genotypes used in the experiment were varieties extensively grown adapted in warm or hot locations around the world. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 3 replications. The unit plot size was 5m long 8 rows with a row spacing of 20 cm. The experiment was conducted for two consecutive years ( 1992-93 and 1993-94 wheat cycle) and planted on December 20 and 22, respectively. Cultural practices appropriate for wheat were followed to grow the crop. Foliar diseases were controlled by applied "Tilt-50 E.C. " regularly starting from pre-anthesis to physiological maturity stage. Data were taken on days to 50% anthesis , physiological maturity.

Data were analyzed using appropriate analysis of variance models in the MSTAT statistical packages. Estimates of genotypic and phenotypic variation were determined by the formula used by Johnson et al. (1955) and their coefficients of variation were determined by Burton (1952).
