Effect of Boron and Zinc on Quality of Tomato (lycopersicon Esculentum Mill.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at BARI, Gazipur to study the effect of boron and zinc on quality of tomato. Three levels of boron and zinc viz. B₂Zn₄, B_2.5Zn₆ , B₃Zn₈kg/ha and three tomato varieties viz.V₁= BARI tomato-9, V₂ = hybrid (GT016 x GT017) and V₃ = BARI tomato-14 were used as treatment. The results of the study revealed that the highest pulp weight (90.46%) and dry matter content (5.76%) in advanced hybrid; ascorbic acid (11.26 mg/100g), lycopene content (140 µg/100g), chlorophyll-1 (42 µg/100g) and chlorophyll-b (59 µg/100g) in BARI tomato-14, marketable fruits at 30 days after storage (72%) and shelf life (15 days) were recorded in BARI tomato-9 with 2.5 kg B + 6 kg Zn/ha.

Objectives:

To find out the influence of boron and zinc on the quality of tomato varieties.

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the Vegetable Research Farm of the Horticulture Research Centre, BARI during the period October 2007 to April 2008. The experimental area is under the sub-tropical climatic zone characterized by relatively scanty rainfall, low humidity, and low temperature, short day and long clear sunshine period during October to April. The soil of the experiment plot belonged to the AEZ-28. The soil P^H was 6.4, organic mater 1.62%, total nitrogen .088%, available P 28 µg/ml, .11 meq/100g of soil exchangeable K, .21 µg/ml B and 1.7 µg/ml Zn. The critical limit of B and Zn were .02 and 2.0 µg/ml. the study consisted of three levels of boron and zinc viz.., i) B₂Zn₄_{, ii)}B_2.5Zn₆ ,iii) B₃Zn₈kg/ha and three tomato varieties viz. v₁₌BARI tomato-9, V₂ = hybrid (GT016 x GT017) and V₃ = BARI tomato-14. Thus there were 9 treatment combinations (3 x 3) in the experiment. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with 3 replications of each treatment. The unit size was 2.8m x 2.4m in size. Two adjacent unit plots were separated by 70cm and 1m space was given between in blocks.In addition to the levels of boron and zinc under investigation, 20 t cowing, 253 kg n, 90 kg p, 125 kg K and 66.6 kg S (550kg urea, 45 kg TPS, 250kg MP and and 120kg gypsum) per hectare were applied. The boron and zinc sources were boric acid and zinc oxide, respectively. Half of the quality of cow dung, the entire quality of TSP, Gypsum and 1/3 MP were applied final land preparation. The remaining Cowdung, entire boron and zinc were applied during pit preparation. From the middle rows of each plot, middle six plants fruits were selected to record data. Recorded data were analyzed statistically and mean were compared by LSD test.

Achievement/Findings:

Considering the above findings, it may be concluded that to maximize the tomato quality viz., pulp weight, dry matter content, TSS, acidity, ascorbic acid, lycopene content, chlorophyll - a & b and zinc content, application of 2.5 kg B+ 6 kg Zn/ha is found to be suitable irrespective of tomato varieties under Gazipur, Bangladesh conditions.
