Variability, Correlation and Path Analysis in Bitter Gourd (momordica Charantia L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic variability, correlation and path-coefficient analysis were done on 36 genotypes of bitter gourd to find out the variation, the association among the characters and to determine the direct and indirect effect of different characters on yield. Genotypic and phenotypic variability were highest (516.075) for single fruit weight followed by number of nodes per main vine and number of fruits per vine. The highest genotypic coefficient of variation (GCV) (34.01) and phenotypic coefficient of (h²b) along with genetic advance was recorded in fruit yield per vine. Fruit yield per vine gad strong positive genotypic correlation with length of main vine, single fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of fruit flesh and rind. Single fruit weight followed by number fruits per vine, thickness of the fruit flesh and length of main vine has maximum positive direct effects on yield. Selection should be made on the basis of above characters for improvement of yield in bitter gourd.

Objectives:

To measure the variability and to establish correlations among the important parameters, and their direct and indirect effect on yield in bitter gourd.

Methodology:

Thirty-six genotypes of bitter gourd were raised in a randomized block design with three replications at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman Agricultural University, Gazipur during March-September 2005. Seeds of 36 genotypes were sown in seed tray containing mixture of soil and well decomposed cowdung (1:1). After 30 days of sowing 2 seedlings of each genotype were planted 2 m apart between rows and 1 ma apart within row in each replication. Manure and fertilizers were applied @ 5 kg cowdung, 10 g urea, 15 g TSP, and 10 g MP in each pit seven days before transplanting. Urea and MP @ 10 g per pit, respectively were top dressed thrice. First top dressing was done 10 days after transplanting, second at the opening at first female flowers and third one after first fruit picking. Vines of plants at each plot were allowed to grow and creep on bamboo stick and rope nets structure. Weeding was done to break the soil crust and to keep the plots free from weeds. Irrigation was given to plants in pits as per requirement. The observations were recorded for all the plants, namely main vine length, number of primary branches per vine, days to first female flower opening, number of nodes where first female flower open. Number of nodes per main vine, number of fruits per vine, single fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, thickness of the fruit flesh thickness of the fruit rind and fruit yield per vine. The mean values of two plants per plot were statistically analyzed. Genotypic and phenotypic coefficients of variations, heritability in broad sense and genetic advice expressed in percentage of mean were estimated.

Achievement/Findings:

The study suggested that single fruit weight, number of fruits per vine, thickness of the fruit flesh, length of main vine, days to first female flower opening, fruit length, fruit width and thickness of the fruit flesh and rind are the most important characters for bitter gourd because the fruit yield is highly influenced by them directly and indirectly.
