Establising Green Manuring Crops with Irrigated Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Effects of Sesbanw aculeata and Sesbania rostrata intercropped with irrigated boro rice sown at varied planting times showed that the relative rice plant height was higher at later planting. Productive tillers and 1000-grain weights were affected by intercropping. About 2.67 - 41.26% reduction In grain yield were recorded. But additional biomass (2-7 t/ha) from green manuring crops were obtained which was incorporated In the soil for succeeding aus cultivation. Reduction in grain yield of aus rice was as high as 17% depending on the quantity of biomass added at 50% reduced N rate. Green manuring crops can be established with Irrigated boro rice.

Objectives:

To determine the effect of GM crops on irrigated boro rice at varied planting times.

Methodology:

The trials were conducted at the Bangladesh Rice Research Institute, Joydebpur during boro seasons of 1990 and 1991. First one was an observational triaI.Fifty three-day old seedlings of rice variety 'BR14' were transplanted on 28 January , 1990 at 25 x 20 em spacing. Seeds of Sesbania aculeata were sown in every two alternate rows of rice at 10, 20, 40, 60 and 80 days after transplanting (DA1). Irrigation water was drained out before sowing. When GM crop seedlings were at 2 to 3 leave stage, they were thinned to 50 plants m-2. Based on the performance of first trial, the second trial was conducted with Sesbania aculeata and Sesbania rostrata. Seeds were sown up to 60 DAT in a split-plot design with three replications. Sowing time was assigned in the main plots and GM crops in the subplots. Forty day-old seedlings of rice cv 'BR 14' were transplanted on 29 January, 1991 at 20 x 20 em spacing. The biomass obtained from GM crops were used in 1991 for succeeding transplant Aus rice (wet season first crop) cultivation. Total biomass obtained from each plot was incorporated into the soil before transplanting Aus rice on 04 June, 1991. Twenty nine day old seedlings of rice cv 'BRI' were transplanted at 20 x 20 em spacing. In this season, treatments·were assigned in a randomized complete block design with three replications.

From the above results and discussion, it could be concluded that in boro season though higher amount of GM biomass was produced from 10 and 20 DAT seeding, it reduces grain yield significantly. Hence 40 DAT seedling was compatible but biomass production was less.
