Effects of Different Time of Planting and Number of Plants Per Hill on Plant Growth and Yield of Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The study was conducted to investigate the effect or different dates of planting and number or plants per hill on plant growth and yield or tomato. The experiment consisted or four dates or planting (October 26, November 11, November 27 and December 13) and three treatments regarding the number or plants per bill (one, two and three plants per hill). The results revealed that plant height, number or leaf, flower and fruits, and yield were the maximum. In October 26 planting with one plant per hill. Total yield or tomato, however, was the highest (70.22 t/ha) In three plants per hill was statistically similar to two plants per hill.

Objectives:

To find out the best time of planting for particular cultivars to increase yield
To find out the number of plant per for higher yield

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Horticulture farm of Bangladesh Agricultural University, Mymensingh during the period from September, 1989 to April, 1990. The tomato cultivar Marglobe was used in this experiment Seeds were sown on four different dates, namely, September 20, October 6, October 22 and November 7 of 1989. In this experiment, the number of plants per hill were 1, 2 and 3. The experiment was laid out in the factorial randomized complete block design with three replications . The unit plot size was 2.4 x 2.0 m and plant spacing was 60 x 60 cm. Thirty five days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on October 26, November 11, November 27 and December 13 of 1989. Standard cultural practices were followed to raise the crop. Harvesting was started on January 30, 1990 and was completed on April 10, 1990.

Achievement/Findings:

These results suggest that the October 26 planting was the best for tomato production and three plants per hill may contribute the maximum total yield of tomato compared to one and two plants per hill.
