Influence of Moisture Regime on the Yield Performance of Hyv Rice in Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Conducting an experiment with six moisture regimes, saturation to 0.10 bar tension was round to be superior. Similar yields were also round in the continuous standing water, continuous saturation and 15 days standing water followed by soil drying upto 0.20 bar tension. Yield was sharply reduced when the soil moisture was always maintained from saturation to 0.20 bar. Plant height, ear length and 1000-grain weight were favoured by the continuous standing water but saturation to 0.10 bar tension favoured the tillering habit. Saturation to 0.20 bar tension adversely affected almost all yield attributes.

Objectives:

To find out a suitable soil moisture regime for optimum growth and yield of rice.

Methodology:

A lysimeter experiment was conducted in BAU campus arranged in a completely randomized design with two replications. The soil represented the Sonatala series of Old Brahmaputra Alluvial Floodplain. the test crop BR3 was grown in the boro season. Fertilizers N130· P90 and K60 were applied during land preparation but nitrogen in three equal splits. Two seedlings in each hill were transplanted in the lysimeter at the spacing of 20 cm X 15 cm. Treatments were : 3 cm continuous standing water (T₁), saturated soil I moisture (T₂), saturation to 0.10 bar tension (T₃), saturation to 0.20 bar tension but saturation at tillering and ear emergence stages (T₄), saturation to 0.20 bar tension (T₅) and 3 cm standing water followed by drying of soil upto 0.20 bar tension (T₁). Standing water was maintained for 16 days in all the treatments after transplanting for seedling establishment. A mercury tensiometer was installed in 12 cm soil depth and irrigation was given based on the tensiometer reading and treatments scheduled.

Achievement/Findings:

Result showed that continuous standing water is not necessary for successful HYV rice production. Intermittent shallow irrigation at about 4-6 days interval depending on soil, climate and growth stages favors the grain yield and may reduce water loss. A standing water for 15 days followed by 0.20 bar tension may also be practiced without significant yield loss.
