Genetic Divergence in Some Germplasm of Pea (pisum Sativum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Genetic divergence In relation to geographical distribution In 128 germplasm or pea originating from 17 different countries of the world was studied through principal component analysis at IPSA in 1988. Results of the study revealed that the scatter diagram or the first two principle components derived from the correlation matrix among the entry means divided the whole population Into 16 broad based groups. Random distribution or genotypes In the clusters Indicated no parallel relationship between genetic and geographical diversity in pea. Inclusion of geographically diverse materials In one genetic group might be due to continuous exchange of gene pool among the countries through trade relationship and International co-operation In research.

Objectives:

To make a genetic classification of pea genotypes originating from different countries of the world through principal component analysis

Methodology:

One hundred twenty eight pea varieties originating from Afghanistan, Australia, Brazil, China, Czechoslovakia, England, Ethiopia, France; Germany, India, Mali, Netherland, Poland, United States of America, Spain, Turkey and Yugoslavia were obtained through courtesy of the United States Department of Agriculture for the present investigation. For Evaluation each genotype was grown in two row 4m long plot replicated 'two times as per randomized block design during l.he winter season of 1988 at the Institute of Postgraduate Studies in Agriculture (IPSA) campus. For normal growl.h standard cultivation practices were followed. Observations were recorded from ten randomly selected plants on days to flowering, plant height (em), days to maturity, pods per plant, seeds per plant, 100 seed weight (g) and seed yield per plant (g). Analysis of variance was done on l.he basis of mean values.

It is also likely that the exotic materials of the present study may not be truly exotic, since in the recent years there has been a free movement of the genetic materials from one country to another. So, it is quite possible that many of the genotypes which had gone outside one country are likely to have been reintroduced under some other name.
