Effect of Rhizobium on Nodulation and Yield of Chickpea (cicer Arietinum L.)

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was conducted at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahaman Agricultural University, Gazipur to study the nitrogen fixing potential of chickpea by Rhizobium inoculants on nodulation, growth, yield ad yield contributing characters of chickpea. BARI Chola-4, BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-6 used as cultivars. The seeds were inoculated with Rhizobium strains, viz. TAL 620, TAL 480 and CP 44. Among the treatments, BARI Chola-6 with the combination of CP 44 Rhizobium inoculants performed best on number and dry weight of nodules, dry weight of shoot and root, yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea. Rhizobium inoculants had a significant positive effect on nodulation, nitrogenase activity, growth, dry matter production, yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea. The highest seed yield of 3.03 g/plant was obtained from CP 44 Rhizobium inoculants with the association of BARI Chola-6 variety of chickpea.

Objectives:

1. To asses the yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea.

2. To determine the status of nodulation, growth, yield and yield contributing characters of chickpea.

Methodology:

A pot experiment was conducted chickpea variety chickpea BARI Chola-4, BARI Chola-5 and BARI Chola-6 as the test crop. Soil clods were collected and broken in the laboratory. Weed, Plant roots and other unwanted materials were removed from the soil samples. The soil was silty clay loam having sand 16.8%, silt 47 %, clay 35.6%, organic carbon 0.93%, pH 6.80, CEC 14.80 meq/100g soil, total nitrogen 0.068%, available P 12.40 ppm, available K 0.33meq/100g soil, exchangeable Ca 6.5 meq/100g soil, exchangeable Mg 3.30 meq/100 soil, exchangeable Na 0.76 meq/100g soil, number of Rhizobium 4.1 x 10⁶/g soil. Earthen pot was filled by twelve kilogram solar sterilized soils. Phosphorus 0.75 g P₂O₅/pot in the form of triple super phosphate, potassium 0.40 g K₂O/pot in the form of muriate of potash, sulphur 0.40 g S/pot in the form of gypsum and molybdenum 0.016 g Mo/pot in the form of ammonium molybdate were applied as basal dose. Nitrogenous fertilizer was not used in this experiment. The experiment was laid out in a factorial complete randomized design (CRD) with 3 replications of each treatment. There were twelve treatment combinations. Factor A:V₁= BARI Chola-4, V₂= BARI Chola-5, V₃= BARI Chola-6 and Factor B: Ro= Uninoculated control, R₁=Rhizobium Strain TAL 620, R₂=Rhizobium strain TAL 480, R₃=Rhizobium strain CP 44. Twenty ml broth inoculums were applied/pot. Alayer of broth inoculums was first placed in each pot filled with non-sterilized soil and was covered with a thin soil layer of 2 cm in which seeds were sown. Counts of viable rhizobia were taken following the Drop Plate Method of Miles and Misra. The plant were carefully uprooted with minimum disturbance of roots so that no nodules were left in the soil. The roots were washed with tap water and finally rinsed with distilled water. Roots were separated from the nodules and then nodule number and weight were recorded. The shoot, root and nodules were first air-dried and then oven-dried at 65⁰C for 72 hours. All data were analyzed in the computer using Duncan's Multiple Range Test.
